Windy's basketball discussion thread

Found this on Reddit so I can’t take credit. Just wanted to share.

We have talked a lot about penalties recently and I wanted to see what the actual number were. Here is an analysis of penalties this year. Both against Tennessee and opponent's penalties. presented without comment.

Edit: u/thegoatisoldngnarly summed this up pretty well. I was trying to just show the data but here is a good summary

Penalties per game. Opponents vs Everybody: 98th Opponents vs Tennessee: 20th

Yards per penalty. Opponents vs Everybody: 54th Opponents vs Tennessee: 4th

Penalty yards per game. Opponents vs Everybody: 67th Opponents vs Tennessee: 5th

Wanted to take a look at the raw numbers of penalties here, both against Tennessee and against Tennessee' opponents, both when playing Tennessee and when playing other teams.

Here is the data presented without comment, I am not here to say there is a giant conspiracy against Tennessee just to present the data that is available.

Average penalty yards per game for all (FBS) Tennessee opponents

6.4 penalties per game, if taken as a whole this would give them a team ranking of 98th in FBS

Average penalty yards of these teams per game when playing Tennessee

4.7 penalties per game, if taken as whole this would give them a ranking of 20th in FBS

Average yards per penalty for all (FBS) Tennessee opponents

8.5 Yards per penalty which would place them 54th best in FBS

Average yard per penalty of these teams when playing Tennessee

7.0 yards per penalty which would give them a ranking of 4th best in FBS

Average penalty yards per game for all (FBS) Tennessee opponents

51.0 yards per game which would rank them 67th best in FBS

average penalty yards per game of these teams when playing Tennessee

I saw one yesterday that broke down when they were called.
Tennessee is #1 in the country by a long way in penalties that extend opponents drives. And # 2 in drive killing penalties.

What are the odds.

It's funny (to me), because UNCA men's basketball plays in Big South, but we have all these great visiting teams playing here in November, and then the SoCon championship in March - in downtown, not on campus.

We snuck into March Madness this past spring, and snuck right back out again (lost bigly to #2 UCLA.) UNCA currently has only ~2800 students, so we aren't a BB powerhouse (and no football team period.)

Holler if you wind up coming!
not gonna make it
my car not fit for round trip and unable to find anyone interested in going
