SDS reports Al Wilson answered questions from the media at Bristol Speedway and drew parallels between the 1998 Vols when he was captain and Team 120:

Per Grant Ramsey (KNS) "Wilson draws parallels between this group of Vols and the 1998 team — led by a senior in Wilson at middle linebacker — that won the first BCS national championship.

“I think the key word was team,” Wilson said. “We were an absolute team. We called ourselves a team of no stars. The guys went out and played for one another. We went out and held each other accountable. The leaders stepped up when they needed to and showed great leadership.

“To be a great team, to win a national championship, those are the kind of things you need.”

Is Al saying team 120 is a "Team" with no stars? Or is he saying that there is great leadership on team 120 but there are stars?

I think what he's saying is Team 120 is a team in the true sense of the word - all working hard for each other - and is a team with strong leadership. JMO:hi:

I met Al Wilson in AZ this past Easter. He was so nice and great to talk to. He is truly passionate about UT football. It was an honor to meet him.

I know I know "cool story bro".

They should've named the street after Al. He was the player most responsible for that title IMO.

Agree. Don't think his point was that team 120 doesn't have any stars. He was discussing mentality and approach and he sees similarities between the 98 team and team 120.

"We want da ball"

I'll never forget how Big Al said that at the coin toss during the 1998 Natl Title and set the tone for us to bring home that crystal ball. I was only 9 but I remember that like it was yesterday.

He said it about the 98 team and that was almost all stars, so for him to say it about #120 then so be it.

Jump higher Vols.

Al Wilson was the heart and soul of the 98 National Championship team.....I remember him coaching from the sideline when he was injured that year.....Al Wilson is one of my favorite Vols of all time....he just had a winning attitude and loved to hit.....boom

Agree. It wasn't like that 98 team didn't have any stars, either. The man we are discussing was one of them. That team was loaded with future NFL high draft picks.

And I like to compare the DLs of both those years. Several good players, but no all-everything guys, more like several good role players, some who could do this and some who could do that. Shaun Ellis/Barnett. Darwin Walker/Vickers or McKenzie. Ron Green/Picou. Billy Ratliff/Tuttle. Jeff Coleman/O'Brien? Corey Terry/Phillips or Vereen or Lewis or Kongbo ... I like it.

The 98 team was a tough minded team, and tough minded players who demanded and lifted each other up week after week. Unlike some other teams and the Tyler Bray types that folded and cried when things went bad real players keep fighting and working. Bray isn't the only one but I have a hard to forgetting him pretty much quiting and pouting during the home UF game. That game made me forever dislike Bray as a QB for UT. Anyway to be a good football player you need to be focused and tough minded, that was the point. Al Wilson is a staple of that type of player. GBO!!!!

We need Al to address this team before the UF game and at halftime as he did with his 98 team.

I'll never forget the look in Big Als eyes on game day. What a Beast he was at LB. I remember the hit he put on QB Doug Johnson during the 97 Gator game in Neyland.
