Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe

Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long- running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.

The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is 94 pages long and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 235 years. He is charged with racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Jefferson is accused of soliciting bribes for himself and his family, and also for bribing a Nigerian official.

Almost two years ago, in August 2005, investigators raided Jefferson's home in Louisiana and found $90,000 in cash stuffed into a box in his freezer.

Jefferson, 63, whose Louisiana district includes New Orleans, has said little about the case publicly but has maintained his innocence. He was re-elected last year despite the looming investigation.

Other than using a Coast Guard helicopter to air lift you to your house so you can get your bribe money out of your freezer.

I marvel at Jefferson's ability to stick to a story after the Feds found $93,000 cash stashed in the freezer.

Why? Is that weird? It is difficult to fit much more than that in a standard freezer and still have room for meatballs and popscicles.

If I had access to a helicopter, I'd go get my money out of the freezer too. It's only a matter of time before it starts to rot and the Republicans smell it.

still doesn't hold a candle to what W has done. all politicians are crooks, it is part of who they are.:)

W is evil plain and simple, and the worst leader of our time. fulmer is a average leader and a good man. there is no comparison. w is the devil on earth.

we're talking about felonies here. poor decision making and faulty leadership are one thing - being morally bankrupt is a horse of a different color

I will help you out here though - the use of smilies does little to help make a point beyond the grasp of a 3rd grader.
