Will we ever get a top runningback in this offense?

You have a bad memory then. I don't think Henry saw the field his frosh year. That was the J.Lewis show and he ran for 1300yds in only 8-9 games because Fulmer is a dufus. Henry/Stephens carried the load in 98, with Henry taking the leading role towards the end of the season.

Out of curiosity - what am I wrong about? Henry had just under a 1000 his soph. year. Stephens only year over 500 yards was 2001, when he had over 1400.

He's committed to Fla St - are we getting jacked up because he's here for a visit? If so, we need to e worried because plenty of our commits are on other campuses nearly every weekend. Don't get me wrong, I sure hope we land him, but it makes me LOL when I read that when our recruits visit other campuses, the attitude is "he's still solid for UT, he just wants to travel and use his OVs", but when we get a commit to another school on our campus, it's "we could really land this guy, afterall, he's here for a visit!". Just makes me laugh
It's still a longshot i agree, but it's odd he visits mtsu weekend especially when 1vs 2 will be on.

Will we EVER get an elite back???????:cray: Oh No, the sky will fall forever. Dooley will NEVER be able to recruit one. Wo is me?

Cmon guys. Get real.

Did I miss something? I didn't see anyone saying the sky was falling or "wo" is me. It's a legitimate question and especially since elite RB's don't exactly grow on tree's. I think not having a paid full time running backs coach has got to hurt recruiting. I can't imagine telling a 4-5* type HS running back that we don't actually have a running backs coach. I think it would give me the impression that Tennessee doesn't take the running back position very seriously.

Chuck Webb and Riggs were both #2 running backs nationally. Bryce Brown was #1. Right now, our blocking scheme is dedicated to a passing attack based on timing patterns. To attract the Lattimores, Richardsons, and Dyers, we need to have #1- a coaching staff sell out to run the ball #2- man blocking, #3- a proven running back coach.

A question like "will we EVER get an elite RB at UT" is ridiculous and is on the level of the "woe is me" crowd. Of course we will. I don't know if we get one this year or even next, but getting one is inevitable.

The agenda of some is that Dooley is too incompetent to hire a RB coach so we will never get one. We are at the limit of allowed coaches. Where do we eliminate a position to have a RB coach? The OC, DC, LB, OL, DL, QB coaches? I would love to have a coach dedicated to RBs and even special teams, but where do we get him? Maybe the OC or QB coaches could double and coach the RBs.

The question the OP asked was not will we ever get an elite running back at Tennessee? He qualified it by saying "in this offense" which makes it a legitimate question. We may be the only team in the SEC without a full time paid running backs coach. I know all the big boys have one. By asking what position we would eliminate kind of proves my point that we may not take the running back position as serious as the other positions on the team. It's not a matter of eliminating other coaches it's just finding the right guy that can coach running backs along with another position. We do have a full time special teams coach that doubles as tight ends coach. I think a TE/RB coach would make more sense. I would love to have former Vol Jay Graham currently USC jr's RB coach come back and coach RB's.

Because Fade only focuses on the negative aspect of every issue. Thought everyone understood that by now.

What on earth are you talking about? What have I been so negative about? You seen me calling for Dools head? NO. My point was a fair one and a TRUE one. IF you deny it, then you're in fantasyland

Thought you meant just Frosh year, read it wrong. If considering Frosh and Soph years then you are accurate as Henry was 2yds shy of 1k in 1998, his 2nd season.

I want another back like Travis Stephens from 2001. I haven't seen a back hit the hole quicker or play harder and more determined than he did that year. Have a lot of respect for T. Stephens

We're not a passing atack in the mold of Leach's T Tech, Houston, etc.. We are a pro style offense which balances the run with pass. We've just had to pass more than run this year because we've been so ineffective in the run and we are constantly facing 2nd and 3rd and long and forced to throw so much downfield

I completely agree. When watching us play these past two seasons it makes it clear that we run a very "pro-style spread" type offense. We under center in alot of two tight end sets and also have a goal line package. But more times than not we were in the shotgun. And often have run plays out of that! Our oline is not near athletic enough for that yet. But you can be successful with it.

Just check out how similar our offense is to New England's offense. we have almost identical routes and formations. Fast forward to there shotgun style formations and you will think you were watching Bray! OUr routes are the same vertical styles that chaney uses. I'd wanna be a premeire running back in that offense. just sayin....

Florida was able to do it with Eric Rhett and Fred Taylor, but it is difficult to recruit the top guys if you are a passing team. They want to go to teams that are running the ball down everyone's throat.

We have to be able to establish a running game to win consistently in the SEC. The old BYUs, Houstons, Leach's Texas Techs, June Jones Hawaii teams- they never won the championship because they were one dimensional.

if we had a running game we wouldnt throw it so much

the only thing UTcan do can to get a top running back is to have PEYTON MANNING as head coach, the second thing is to have JOHN FINLAYSON as the offensive line coach and get JOHN CHAVIS back for our defensive man running the show, then we can win in the SEC

Yeah! And AL WILSON as a LB coach! And ERIC BERRY as a DB coach!
