Florida was able to do it with Eric Rhett and Fred Taylor, but it is difficult to recruit the top guys if you are a passing team. They want to go to teams that are running the ball down everyone's throat.

We have to be able to establish a running game to win consistently in the SEC. The old BYUs, Houstons, Leach's Texas Techs, June Jones Hawaii teams- they never won the championship because they were one dimensional.

We're not a passing atack in the mold of Leach's T Tech, Houston, etc.. We are a pro style offense which balances the run with pass. We've just had to pass more than run this year because we've been so ineffective in the run and we are constantly facing 2nd and 3rd and long and forced to throw so much downfield

I think the past 2 years the passing game has been our only option I don't think Dooley intends to keep it that way for ever he's just doing what puts ut in the best position to win and when bray and hunter were healthy that was pretty much it. You have to run the ball to have success in the sec, and I think we will see a more balanced attack next year if we can improve on the o line and get a premier back

What do you mean by "top?" If I remember correctly, Neal was the #9 RB according to Rivals in 2010 and Lane was the #23 in 2011. I think both will turn out to be good.

I'm trying to think of UT RBs that had huge freshmen and sophmore years in the last 20 years and (while I stand to be corrected) am having trouble coming up with anyone other than Lewis, yet we had a number of them put up big numbers and get drafted.

Lamarcus Coker was fairly good freshman, is this his senior season this year? Bryce Brown did ok before he left but, think he was way over-hyped as a number one rated recruit.

I seem to remember a few names. James Stewart, Travis Stevens, Cedric Houston Travis Henry Reggie Cobb, Garner and I am sure I have left a fer out.

We need a big time back. Auburn has 2 in Rivals top 10 running backs. Tennessee needs a top back real bad.

Mario Pender class of 2012......hopefully...

He's committed to Fla St - are we getting jacked up because he's here for a visit? If so, we need to e worried because plenty of our commits are on other campuses nearly every weekend. Don't get me wrong, I sure hope we land him, but it makes me LOL when I read that when our recruits visit other campuses, the attitude is "he's still solid for UT, he just wants to travel and use his OVs", but when we get a commit to another school on our campus, it's "we could really land this guy, afterall, he's here for a visit!". Just makes me laugh

Fade route's got a good point, and we shouldn't get too optimistic, but remember the recruitment of Marlin Lane set a precedent that we could possibly see repeated this year as well.

I should have been more specific - I was talking about someone getting over 1000 yards their fresh. or soph. year, similar to what Lattimore did for USCjr. last year. I think Stewart and Henry came close, but didn't get there.

Stephens didn't put up big numbers until his senior year, Cobb was more than 20 years ago, and my memory is that Garner came from a juco.

I think are chances would be better if we had a coach specifically designated for the RB position.

If we REALLY wanted a certain runningback couldn't we get J.Lewis and/or some others to be here and talk to them about how they are gonna help another kid carry on the NFL traditions? We could pay former players whatever we wanted to be consultants in the offseason right?

Then why isn't he at BAMA LSU like every other recruit in the nation? Something's up for sure..

When Manning was here, we were a passing offense first, but we ended up being balanced because we have good running backs. In one recruiting class, we had Henry, Lewis and Stephens. Lewis left after 3 seasons. Henry stayed 4 seasons and Stephens stayed a 5th season. It all worked out for all of them!!!

You have a bad memory then. I don't think Henry saw the field his frosh year. That was the J.Lewis show and he ran for 1300yds in only 8-9 games because Fulmer is a dufus. Henry/Stephens carried the load in 98, with Henry taking the leading role towards the end of the season.
