Will UT be vanilla in game 1?

I think DD goes for the basics, left foot then right foot. Keep it simple and build confindence

I agree 100%. Win the game, but let's keep the playbook intact! Go VOLS! Beat as many as possible, and my prayers would be answered if we beat Bama, Florida, or georgia. :superman:

UT can blow out utm with just a base offense. They don't need to be showing any of their other sets in that game. Just get a huge lead and let the backups play the rest of the game.

Here's a hint: Dooley. Great bloodlines. Attorney. Worked for Saban. Very, VERY high character coach, and keeps his cards very close to his vest.

Add all that up...factor in a coaching staff who needs to find out "what they really have" before the Oregon game, and.....

Largely vanilla. Look for UT to simply try to out-muscle UTM. But...in the first half, expect to see Wilcox unhitch a couple of his blitz looks; a couple of deep passes to Moore and/or whoever ends up on the other side; and one or two plays with Gerald Jones in the G-Gun. Gotta find out if it works, even if against UTM.

Unless it's an absolute blowout from the start, we'll see a couple of trick plays and/or deep balls in the first half.

More things for Oregon to worry about.

Dooley won't show all his cards against UTM, but he will show a couple of looks that will give Oregon extra things to think about, and have to prepare for.

2nd half will be used to firm up the two-deep, and maybe find that diamond in the rough.

As "Dubya" used to say..."Strategery".....

Go Vols.

What do having great bloodlines & being a high character coach have to do with being vanilla in the first game?

What I've been told is, don't be too shocked if really vanilla most of year while young, inexperienced offensive line learns to play at this level. was told, "don't expect any fancy play calling".

ive been stewing over that comment and i really dont know how to interpret it. does it mean dont expect an offense that is fun to watch? dont expect any creativity?

It's all about "how Dooley thinks", and those are important elements in that equation.

You'll see, as the season progresses.

Will Derek build up every opponent like dad Vince? Vince Dooley could make UT Martin sound like a super bowl contender the week before the game.

Yep, Vince was a classic Southern poor-mouthing football coach. I reckon we'll see much of the same from his son. The Bear was the master of this. Feeds into the underdog mentality discussed in a recent thread.

FWIW, I would expect to see a pretty plain gameplan, with subs rotating in and out for experience. Maybe a few fancier things just to see. Can't wait!

You can't be vanilla with a RB and QB starting their first game. You want them to get as much as experience as possible. In the past UT would run only 8-10 plays in an opening game with a new QB. Wanting to not throw too much at a new QB. This being an easy win, I think UT will run a lot more.

Nothing looks vanilla to fans when it's working.

Arkansas and Tennessee - 1998 - Last minute and a half...behind by 3....5 or six straight runs to the same back. Was that a "vanilla" offense? :)

I would think not a lot until game experience grows them to it. With inexperienced lineman, for example, coaches expect a mistake on ever play until the unit grows together over the coruse of seveal games. Depending on talent and capabilities, some groups grow quicker than others but taking a whole season is not unheard of and our kids have almost ZERO experience and do have ZERO experience playing together.

Chaney will not get creative or try much more than basic executions until the lineman can adapt to each other, the speed of the game and the system. Of course, with our offense we have several others in same boat as the offensive line.

As for the "pre-game hype", I don't think we'll see too much of Vince, or the Bear, in Derek Dooley. I do think he will play to our opponent's strengths, but not with the same flair that Vince and the Bear (among others) raised to an art form.

Derek will be more...honest...in his assessments. Look, when you're an underdog in, what...probably 7 or 8 of our games, given current projections?...it's expected that you are going to talk about how dangerous your next opponent is.

Against UT-Martin...I'm having second thoughts. While I do expect a largely vanilla game plan, I also still think that Dooley will uncork the offense on at least one series, and likewise a few plays with the defense, just to see what works in (hopefully) a "no-risk" game situation.

I look for Poole to have a HUGE first half against UTM, and spend the second half mentoring the 2nd and 3rd team TB.

I also think we'll see the "Full Monty" against Oregon. Don't need Sherlock Holmes to figure that one out, but JMO.

Look, it might be a lean year, or two, but given what he has already accomplished...salvaged the 2010 class...the 2011 class is starting to shape up nicely...the discipline he has instilled...the assistants he has hired or retained...and all we have seen of Derek Dooley so far...only one question really remains...

Can he coach?

We'll know soon enough.

Go Vols.

We wont show much because it wont take much. I dont care what some on this board say..

I'm with you on this one...Unless UT plays like Auburn did a few years ago against UTM. UTM gave Auburn a good run for their money two years ago.

he is giving the starters the day off so he can give the backups some reps

Starters play the whole game unless we are up by 28 or so. Starters need the game experience. Backups will play in mop up time. This team does not have the luxury of giving the starters the day off- Our starters on the OL have 3 combined starts (or something very close). Enough said.

I say Vanilla thru and thru. This should and will be a massacre. I am from West TN and very familiar with UTM football and it will be ugly. I expect Dooley and the vols to run at will on UTM. Many long plays from scrimmage and everybody but the water boy plays.

Yeah, but that running back was an animal!
He looked as big as half the Arkansas D-line!
