Even with the worst offense I can remember a Tennessee team having, the defense was one of the top ranked last year. Any chance this year's defense is close to as good as the one Chavis had last year?

I think so. and hopefully even better. Our secondary is out of this world and CEO/CLT will have the front 7 fighting nasty. im very optimisitic. Nobody can deny Monte's knowledge and coaching ability, it should one heck of a show.

I cant wait to watch our team walk off the field after 3rd down this year!! That is one thing I think we all hated was watching our boys get a team in 3rd and Long and we give up a first down! Nothing used to piss me off more....Well except when Crompton would throw it into the d lines chest on a slant route. But I am excited about next year for sure! If feels like a brand new team! Everyone starts fresh!

As long as we've taken the 3rd and Chavis play out of our book I'll be happy. I'd bet that Monte will do a little better on 3rd and 20+. If Chavis had been a little better at that we'd probably have two more SECC and at least a NC game appearance.

they won't be ranked as high because our offense won't be giving every team a short field this year (well, I hope). It's hard for the other teams to rack up huge yards when they start on our own 30yd line.

they have the same problem as last year in regard to the DT's, though the two they had starting last year are probably better than the two they'll have this year. the back 7 and ends should be pretty good. i don't know if it will be top 10 def like last year, but they shouldn't be awful that's for sure.

Good point PJ, and I'll add that us having a better offense (hopefully) will require our opponents to keep their foot on the gas... whereas last year we probably saw some opposing offenses go conservative on us knowing the impotency of our offense.

Additionally, Monte's defensive philosophy appears to be more of a "bend but don't break while creating turnovers...." so I could see us giving up more yards than last year but forcing more turnovers.

+1

Not to mention all of the back-ups our defense played against when the game was out of reach.

The new D coordinator is hell of alot more experienced and smarter. We'll see how that translates to play. Gotta like our chances.

you mean stopping the terrible teams and getting run over by the good teams, yeah, I hope they are better this year

We'll see how the team performs on 3rd and long. Last year the opposing team seemed to have a better then 50% chance of a first down.

I'd just be happy if they don't let a good offense walk all over them. Playing terrible offenses was something our Defense also benefited from last year.

I don't recall our defense getting "run over by the good teams" last year. When the offense turns the ball over, and the other team goes 20 yards for a TD, that's not really getting run over, that's being given no chance.

We got ran over by UF, UGA and Bama.

Really, Ga, Ala, and Fla were really the only solid offensive teams UT had to play last year. While they held Fla to low total yards, check out 3rd down conversion rate, when they wanted it, they got it. This is not counting what USCe did also, I wouldn't count them as a good offensive team.

Florida was 8 of 13 on 3rd down. That's not bad, but they still didn't have a TD drive of over 50 yards, and only had 243 yards of total offense. They scored their first TD because our kick coverage let them start at our 44, and then we gave up a punt return for a TD. Our special teams lost that game, along with offensive turnovers in the red zone.

This is was also at the begining of the year when UF was slopping around in the mud, not until the week after Ole Miss, did UF offense even show up, UT plays them at the end of the year?

They had none of those things because they had the game won in the first quarter and went hyper conservative. Everyone watching pretty much knew that a 17 point deficit would be insurmountable. I almost believe that Meyer put the brakes on to prevent a 63-0 type blowout in Neyland - just to try and keep fulmer around another year for the easy win.

Well fortunately we don't have to waste too much of our time wondering about that scenario, because we always play Florida in September. All I am saying is that our defense really kept us in the Florida game in the first half. They held UF's offense to 0 yards and a field goal in a MUST STOP situation after our first turnover, and if not for 2 disastrous turnovers inside the Florida 2, it would have been 20-14 at the half and we would have taken the ball coming out of the locker room.

Agreed, just look like he was trying to work out the kinks, maybe even worse than getting beat 63-0, having your team used as a practice squad.

jakez4ut we only lost 1 def. tackle last year, williams is still here. I think we will be a lot better on 3rd down plays this year!

Statistically about the same as far as ypg. But they will make a lot more impact plays. Also will be a nasty squad as far as the hits go.
