I havent been able to follow recruiting as I did before, but there seems to be some excitement over the new members of the staff. Now they have the talent to showcase their ability to coach. Is a top 10 class, a feasible hope? I dont know anything about the # of scholarships available, or what positions we need most, other than LB.

Yes, this staff is going to be 100% Grade A Killers on the recruiting trails. It is like a freakin' All-Star team!!!

For a team thats been in the crapper for years, Dooley has already proven he can recruit. Adding Sal, Graham, Pittman and Hinshaw has proven he is a hell of a recruiter, I agree with JH. All Star recruiters!!!

This staff needs to be able to produce top 10 classes consistently in order to have the talent to average around 9 wins per year, assuming Dooley is not fired or any NCAA violations.

Winning should raise expectations and make recruiting easier. In order to be at the top of the SEC, we need to be around the top 5 nationally on a consistent basis, but wins have to come first. People need to understand this, and those who are thinking we are ready to "be back" are still a step too far ahead. If we win an average of 9 games over the next three years, then we may make noise.

(If only it was that easy.)

IIRC (and it's likely i don't, ha), but i think we'll only be able to sign 18-20 players because of the small amount of seniors we have and scholarship limitations; that said, a top 10 class doesn't seem feasible, strictly from a number's standpoint... Please correct me if I'm wrong. It doesn't mean we won't bring in some talented kids though.

I have felt for quite a while now that the '12 class will be DD's best class so far--but it is definitely contingent on the team WINNING this season.

I'm not nearly as optimistic about DD as I once was but Dooley is in a prime position to be 2012's Dabo Sweeney and win 9+ games....but hopefully we don't get BLOWN OUT like he did in a bowl game.

It's a pretty good staff recruiting-wise. However, I agree with some of the others on this thread in that they have to start winning beginning this season if they want to be a major factor with a bunch of the elite guys out there.

Pittman is a definite upgrade over Heistand. Sunseri is an enormous upgrade over Wilcox. Graham seems to be a pretty good recruiter too.

I think the most important thing with this new staff is that the guys Dooley has brought in are guys that have ties to areas Tennessee "NEEDS" to have success in. Particularly, North Carolina, Virginia and the East Coast in general. I think it is better to have guys who can recruit those areas compared to guys who had ties in Alabama (Thompson), Texas (Russell) and Louisiana (Joseph). It is much harder recruiting in those states and beating out the in-state schools for big-time players compared to pulling guys from the east coast states IMO.

Based on the early returns Ansley really seems like he could be a hell of a recruiter as well. He is mentioned a lot already, much like Sirmon was last year in his first season.

Good post and I agree. Combined with this is the need to show a winning trend. A 9+ win season sends the program on its way and recruiting gets easier as they add the new facilities. I really wish this had been the staff CDD started with as they are a really good staff.

lol @ Jacksons post and lol @ nick j's avatar having a new facility is definately not going to hurt recruiting, i just hope this staff can get busy like Kiffin's staff did, minus the violations and smack talking.

Kiffins staff...no bueno... high stars and little to no production. I think it has been determined his class is the biggest bust of that cycle.

I think we have gone great on the recruiting trail with our past coaches and the new ones are just as good if not better. I like the new attitude the coaches and players have right now. I think this staff will be a well oiled machine on the recruiting trail and on game day

LB, OL, and DB are the biggest needs from a numbers standpoint. Doesn't mean the other parts of the team aren't in need of elite talent. It's just that from a numbers standpoint those are the biggest needs for the future.

Even then, it's not like you can go out and flood a position. I'm looking at them taking 4 LBs this class. They really need a lot more, but they're getting hammered by the 25-man limit. Plus, when everybody gets in this Fall, you'll have a compliment of 85 scholarship players (who, unlike prior years, all deserve Tennessee scholarships).

For a lot of reasons (attrition, early entry to the NFL, dismissals for cause), I'm looking at this being a 20-23 man class. I think Dooley's righted the ship, and regardless of whether he's the coach in 2013 or not, the roster will be attractive to the elite talent you would expect at the top half of the SEC.

To answer your original question, are they going to be elite recruiters? Yes, I believe so. Is that going to translate to a top-ten class? I'm not sure about this year. Next year, probably.
