Athlon publishes a regional issue in every part of America. I don't think they are going to rate us higher just because the rag is published in Nashville. Don't put it in the same league as "Football Time In Tennessee", which always seems to have 3 Vols make All American and 7 on All SEC.

Athlon had us as the pre season #2 team in 2005.

I have the magazine, and its still hard to this day looking through it and thinking of what happend.

We should be in the top 25 since on paper we should win the SECE. Remember I said on paper. USC has it's best shot ever this year in the East.

Yeah I'll remember you said it so we can all laugh when USC has another mediocre season.

honestly, who cares where we are ranked pre-season? it means nothing.

Honestly, it is somewhat important. I think it's lame that these polls are even released, but they really do affect how a team ends up ranked at the end of the year. UT won't be able to pass any team ranked ahead of us that finishes with the same record - even if we beat that team.

I'm not sure about the on paper analysis. Hopefully, I'll have time to start studying such things this summer. I do think that based on a quick down and dirty look at who has what coming back, and recent trends of which team tend to reload rather than rebuild at certain positions, UGA will be the favorite in the East. UF, even with many new faces will probably get the benefit of the doubt for #2 from many people due to being defending BCSNCs.

Tennessee will make every knowledgable publication's preseason top 25. With a senior qb at the helm and a favorable schedule, UT will probably be ranked anywhere from #13-#20.

I have it too. They even had a photoshopped photo of us versus USC in the BCS title game. It makes me sick to this day even thinking about it.

Sr. QB coming off a knee surgery, however standard a procedure it may be, who lived off the passing game yet has no returning starting recievers, an OL that will probably be no better than marginally improved, and no standout RB. I agree that the Vols will make a lot of preseaon top 25 lists, and I'll leave it at that for now.

I see where Miami checks in at #24, seems like a stretch but I guess they are one of those teams you'd better include if you want to sell lots of magazines?

Miami's a top 25 team.

There's plenty of talent and depth...the secondary, as is standard in Miami, is going to be great...Kyle Wright has been inconsistent, but should give them good senior leadership. If the o-line can improve, they've got a good chance of winning the wide-open ACC and playing in a BCS bowl.

I can't imagine less than 9 wins from the Canes this season.

In some places maybe, but they've got as many question marks as anybody ; especially on defense.
In recent years, UGA has shown a propensity for reloading at the LB position and both the OL and DL. This year they will have more experienced skill players than last year, which is the rationale (however flimsy) behind my analysis. I do think that UT's weakness in the secondary, if it in fact exists, is going to hurt the Vols badly due to the number of good passing teams they play this year.

Ainge's knee is fine...there's really no worry there. The lack of proven receivers is a legitimate concern though.

This isn't UT's deepest or most talented team, but the Vols have a favorable schedule. We get Florida early - which, for once, is better than playing them late...we get UGA at home, and we finally get a break in our rotating non-division games with Arkansas in Knoxville and MSU in Starkville.

Florida has plenty of question marks...and though open positions will be filled by talented players, they'll still be inexperienced. Games vs. UT, Auburn, UGA and road trips to LSU, South Carolina, and Ole Miss, make Florida's road to Atlanta tougher than Tennessee's.

Georgia has more question marks than we do...they'll be better than the team that lost to Vandy AND Kentucky last year, but they play 9 total bowl teams and have Auburn and Alabama from the West.

You've got to have talent to win games...but it helps to have a favorable schedule if you want to play in Atlanta. And, of the big 3 in the East, UT has comparable talent and the most favorable schedule.

Curious. In your opinion, who are the good passing teams we'll play?

Cal, SC, and KY will all be good passing teams this year. IMO Tebow showed me enough heart and skill, and UM showed me enough adaptability in his scheme that I have to think UF will be a good passing team with Harvin, Murphy and whoever else they've got down there.

they had 5 players drafted, 4 on defense. Their offense stinks and they hired a defensive coach.

Miami is used to having large numbers of players drafted...that's why kids go to Miami.

The ACC is wide-open, and winnable this year.

Who's better?

Clemson? They'll choke on their first 4 games or last 4 games, like they do every year...a new qb and new o-line won't help them either.

FSU? The Seminoles have as many problems as Miami does right now...and FSU's biggest problem is the feeling of complacency that you get from Bobby Bowden...I don't see the fire in the old man. They'll be improved though, and it wouldn't shock me if they made it to Jacksonville.

Wake? Grobe had an unbelievable run last year, but lightning won't strike twice...Wake has a 0% chance of repeating as ACC champs.

Georgia Tech? With defenses no longer triple-teaming CJ, the Jacket offense will really struggle.

Boston College? They lost their biggest asset in Tom O'Brien.

I'd call Virginia Tech the favorite...and after that, Miami's better than any team in the conference.
