Will Tennessee ever be able to be elite ever again?

Because we didn't just give the Head Coaching job to John Chavis when we had the chance. Now we are so far behind the curve that it will be 7 to 12 years before we are competing at a respectable level again.

DId we really lose a lot with that move? Didn't Kiffin bring in some stud? I just don't get it.

different reasons for lack of success different years. for several years we were plagued by bad qb play and lack of receiver talent. this year bad line on both sides of the ball. also, football requires some luck. we've had bad breaks in big games. injuries, player suspensions, high profile recruits that were just flat out busts. at some point we'll get a few of the breaks going our way again and it will start to reverse momentum

serious question. It's not the 1950's when there were only a couple powerhouses where all the best players went to (alabama, tennessee, michigan, notre dame, etc).

Tennessee has to recruit out of state players because there is absolutely no talent within the state. Is it just too hard to recruit an entire competitive/elite team all from outside the state? Will Tenn never be elite again until the state starts growing better athletes? Does the whole system (pop warner through high school) need to be fixed? What's the solution and why is the in-state talent so piss poor?

There is more than enough talent in Memphis. We just need to appeal to that talent, and quit letting slip away to out of state programs.

...and john chavis should have never been offered the head coaching job. we did allow fulmer to stay on way too long though.

70 percent freshman and sophmores. Tennessee does not have nearly the talent base to suffer the kind of attrition it did from 05-10. Remember that as good of classes as Dooley put together they have trailed FLA and Bama. So going our freshmen and sophmores against their seniors and juniors is a recipe for disaster.

We can compete we just definitely need a running game. Another thing that we haven't had( well we've had just lost) is extremely athletic DBs. I'm counting down the years till we can hopefully see two Berry's in our defensive backfield.

I heard this same thing when I was young. I heard old guys say things would never be like the late 40's and 50's. Then we experienced something great in the 90's again. One of those old guys told me after 99 that we would now hit rock bottom for a while. Then after a decade we would start to come back. A couple years later he passed away and never got to see it happen like he had guessed.
I think we will come back to the top. To hit a streak like we did in the 90's may take a long time but way before that we will win conference titles and be ranked in the top 10 often. Seems like yesterday my brother and myself would wish to be in the elite. We always complained about never being better than a top 10 team. All of the sudden we were in the elite and number 1.
Only one place to go when on top and that's down. Hate to drop as far as we did but things are getting better.

Good answer. :hi:

OP must not have watched the game.

Oh I watched it. I also saw we we're outmatched the entire game. I know we got lucky not to be blown out in the first half. I know the fumble by Demps wasn't a fumble and we got great field position for a td. If not it was going to be 33-7 or 37-7 real quick. We were metling even worse in the 3rd quarter than we were the entire first half. They had figured us out and we had no answer until that happened. So we shouldn't look at it as we lost a shootout. this game was more like the 09 game where we should be glad to get out of there with some kind of dignity. people need to wake up and get real around here. We aren't going to beat uga, lsu, bama, ark, or uscj. That's 6-6 again. We maybe able to sqeeze out 7-5. Bray will have 4500 yard passing and 35 td though.

Volberry, I disagree with pretty much every thing you just wrote. This will turn out to be a good season, even without Hunter.

We will have random years of greatness ,but the way things are going I don't see us being consistantly good because like you said we just don't have the recruits in our back yard.

Rebuilding takes time. Freshman mistakes can be killers. Maggitt clobbered Rainey twice and didn't wrap him up. AJ Johnson was out of position on Rainey's long TD run. On the other side, Florida's secondary, mostly freshmen, were holding and interfering with our receivers on just about every play and got penalized.

Muschamp and Saban's roster were not as devoid of talent as ours when they started as was DD's when he came on board. It is going to take time fans. The Hunter and other future injuries to come will add to that and we don't have the depth to fill in yet.

Let's face it, the young OL didn't run block last year and the same crew can't run block this year. But the good news is that the team played hard to the end and made a game of it. With more talent and experience it could have resulted in a win.

EVeryone is entitled to their opinion. I don't have any hate for you because of it. But I disagree with you. We will have flashes of greatness, and times we are exposes. as the season goes on we will see. I'll go to what ever bowl game we get.

I still think depth issues are a big part of it. We are playing converted O lineman at DT, playing converted DEs at DT, playing a converted fullback at MLB, playing a minor league baseball player at safety.

I like our players but it just goes to show how bad the depth we have right now is, starting two true freshman at LB, 4 of our 5 offensive lineman are sophomores, our most experience wide out is a junior and not even that good, and so on and so on and so on.

It will take time, we are still thin and very inexperienced.

We dont have the depth at the moment to consistently compete at a high level but it is quickly changing. We as a fanbase need to be a little more patient and give the coaches time to complete the rebuilding process. Top tier athletes with options are not blowing our doors because the coaches are not lying and making empty promises to them. Its going to take time! GO VOLS!!

Simple answer: No oline play. That is the only thing fron preventing us from being a gfood team this year.

Long answer: something to do with coaching....the oline play and missed tackles are inexcusable
Amen sounds like somebody knows what is wrong. Hope that our coaches can fix it next time we play a top 20 team.

I ****ing hate idiot fans

Its not Dooleys fault you stupid *******s

We are a young team. We are going to go through the growing pains

You can tell who has never put on pads and played the game

I'm with you 100%! I don't think most of the people on here ever put on pads! Most of them probably sat in the stands and cheered/booed those of us who did!:furious3:

I think this will be considered a silly question when Tennessee wins 10 or more regular season games in 2012.

No offense, but that is a rediculous question to me. Of course we can. In the 90's there were very few teams that were better than us. We competed on a national level, and when we won our national championship in 98 most of our team was made up of kids from GA, SC, and a few from NC. That is why GA has been such an important state for us which is why I like Dooley having all his ties in GA and him and the staff hitting GA hard.

And secondly it's not like we are some second tier team. We are in the best conference in the country, the third largest stadium in the country, and we are updating all of our facilities, we have the money to support the team and get whatever we want. We go through a few well more like 8 not so great years and everyone thinks we are gonna be horrible forever. No school can stay at an extremley high level for long because eventually the roster gets a little too deep and recruits see that. USC had how many bad years before Pete Carroll came in and the came back up and dominated for a long time. Albeit by cheating, but you get my point.

Yes we will! And on the in state talent, we don't have what others have but we have enough to make a huge difference. We get around 7 instate guys each year who are legit SEC talents. That's about a third of each class, which helps tremendously! There r no excuses! We r getting top classes now and will get even better with winning! We knew this was gonna take a couple of years to recover from! No need to panic!

We can't stay in the 6 to 7 range recruiting wise and compete with the other SEC teams. We saw yesterday what top recruits can do. The defense burried us, their offense ran around us like we were standing still.
