1st - the new OC may like more mobile QBs even though JG remains as the starter. In fact, that is what I hope happens this next year… we start to see more playing time for Hendon so that by the end of year they can trade JG for a defensive starter and/or draft picks..
2nd - I don’t think the team can do anything regarding his contract. He just has to make the team. Rookie contracts can’t change until after 3 full years. Of course they could trade him.
Probably wrong on all fronts. Who knows.
On your second point, contracts for those drafted are generally 4 year contracts. (The lower rounds may still be 3, not sure?).
With those who get 4 year contracts, they are 4 year guaranteed contracts-no matter what.
Now, the teams can add a fifth year to the contracts at significantly higher cost. Then the 6th and 7th year could be franchised theoretically and a player if so determined could hit the market for his 8th year.
If a team is going to add the 5th year, that has to be decided after the third year. So the Lions will have to decide after this season whether they want to extend Hooker or not. Right now, no-no they will not.
So for his 4th year assuming the Lions do not extend the team will have to make a choice.
1. Either keep him for the 4th year and him walk afterwards to free agency and the team gets nothing
Or
2. After the 25 season they trade him for whatever they can get.
The NFL is an ugly business.
Now-anything could happen this coming season. Goff could go down and Hooker could light it up and become the man.
I'm just saying that the Lions will have to make a decision him after this season one way or another-no.matter what.
