Will I, a 28-year-old lifelong fan, live to see Tennessee win an SEC or CFP title?

Well hiring/firing every 3-4 years sure hasn’t worked out for us. Maybe it’s time to settle in and give a coach some real time to rebuild this thing.
Yep. Franklin reportedly turned down a $9M offer. I'm sure there were others. That's why we have Heupel and had Pruitt and Butch. The job is toxic right now. That's why White hired him....he was willing to dive into this cesspool and try to rescue us. Heupel is far better than Pruitt or Butch in terms of coaching, and he's a helluva step up in terms of the way the team responds to him. Will he be able to get us back to contending in the east? No clue, but I have no stomach for yet another coaching search, and frankly, it's asinine to be talking about a change after 4 damned games with a program that's been napalmed by it's own administration. If there ever were a coach that deserved a year zero and a super long leash, it's Heupel. UT needs some stability and consistency. We need this staff to stay together for at least the next few years. It's just gonna take time.

No, never will happen again. Tennessee will have a losing season for the 60 years. But if you live to be 89, then you will see one.

Age brings perspective. I watched some really bad Tennessee football teams play during the 70s and the first half of the 80s. Then we had an incredible run during the 90s. I feel like this coaching staff is good and, given time, they can turn our current horrendous stretch around. I know some will disagree but I'm seeing players in position to make plays and not making those plays. That can be turned around with just a couple of recruiting classes. I don't think we are going to win the east in a couple of years but I definitely think we can be competitive in two or three more years.

It’s a question I never pondered until reckoning with my mortality and Tennessee’s obvious distance in caliber from Florida tonight. We are multiple recruiting cycles away from that level assuming Heupel is the guy.

I genuinely may never see Tennessee football win another SEC or CFP title.

It is astonishing to reckon with that given that I am just old enough to have spent some years of my life watching the Vols compete at that level.

I am now at the age where random death is a matter of random selection and Tennessee may as well be an infinite distance from the CFP or college football relevancy.

We have had so many opportunities to correct this train wreck but have failed miserably every time with mind boggling incompetency. It is heart breaking to see a once proud program reduced to medocrity. Unfortunately the length of time this has continued has caused even the die hard fans to become apathetic. Hard to expect anything else. Prime example is Florida has won 16 of the last 17 games against us.

I don't think so honestly..Tennessee football was an outlier in the 90s...we are a middle of the pack program like the MS schools UK and USCe...there will be years when we might beat UF, UGA, or even Bama...but I don't ever see us being able to run the SEC gauntlet and beating all 3 in a year. Warm bowl games and 10 win seasons are the ceiling imo

I hate that you missed the days where people cried over 10 win seasons. Thank them because they got what they wanted.
Yep, in 2007 we finished ranked 12th in the nation with a 10-4 record including a bowl win. 2008 season showed just how spoiled the admin and fans are and were.

Do you have an urge to become a fentanyl addict in the near future? How about an overwhelming desire to go play human frogger on I-40?

Assuming a no to those questions, you SHOULD live long enough to see the Vols win an SEC championship according to actuarial tables.

Playoffs, I dunno. Who knows how long the playoffs will exist in their current form.

All that being said, none of us know when our time is up. Not to be morbid, but you could roll off your couch tomorrow while taking a nap and land at the precisely wrong angle and be dead instantly. Life is a crapshoot. Enjoy it while you can.

98 was a fluke.

Just hang in there. As a lifelong Rams fan I have had much more disappointment from them than I have my beloved Vols.

Perhaps this is just one of those periods where UT football is down. The program had it for about 11 or 12 years after Neyland left. Majors first 4 or 5 seasons were not that good either and had another bad one in 1988. And we are seeing another down period after another legendary coach left. Except this time it's lasting a little bit longer it seems.

We aren't the only traditional program that is down. Florida State and Nebraska fans are going through the same thing we are going through.

College football is cyclical. Alabama had some bad years before Saban arrived. Georgia had some bad ones before Richt and Florida wasn't much before Spurrier arrived.

Yes, you will. When I was 28 in 1980 we lost to Hershel and USC on back to back weeks. I think we went 5-6 that year. The next year we were blown out by UGA 44-0, and 43-0 by USC. Two years later we beat #2 Alabama in one of the loudest games in Neyland in my lifetime and continued that for a 4 game win streak. In the following 41 years we have won 5 SEC championships and one NC.

The answer is just keep breathing and you will be fine.

Yes.

But eat garlic, kale and oats, and do a lot of walking.

There is a chance we will, but not in the next couple of years. Maybe this coming decade though, who knows.

We have too much tradition, fans and resources to not ever be great again. It may be a long time but we will hit the right hire one day. Hell we may have already have. Just look at Clemson before Dabo. Hell look at Penn State. I didn't think they'd be a contender for at least 10 to 20 years after The Sandusky thing. If Penn State can survive that then there's no reason we can't We've just have had a string of bad ADs that made bad hires. Our day will come again.

Tennessee went a 75 year stretch of winning more football games than anyone else……anyone.

It’s been 13 years since then……but compared to that 75 year stretch….that’s nothing.

Tennessee can get back……I’m just hoping it’s in my lifetime.
