Jake Butt at Michigan. As Ben mentioned, Jaylon Smith was going to be at top 5 pick and blew his knee and could have cost him his career.

It is absolutely, unequivocally a smart decision to sit out a non playoff bowl game if you are going to the NFL. Why take the chance? You know what the player gets for a bowl game? A $500 "swag" bag. That's peanuts compared to potentially lost earnings if you get a serious injury. Maybe if the NCAA paid the players correctly, they could play the bowl game. And it doesn't hurt and won't hurt NFL draft stock because most bowl games are meaningless towards draft stock.

Bowl games are just fun exhibitions anyways. A lot of coaches care about the extra practices they get to develop players than the actual game.

With that rationale a player could sit out any game if he decided the risk of injury would reduce his possible financial income at a later time.

Hell yeah, get that money young man. If the NCAA isn't gonna pay you and they would still be drafted in the first couple rounds of the NFL then they should definitely do it.

This was my initial reaction. But, a (non playoff) bowl game can have a couple different purposes. It's a reward for the players, but it's also the opportunity to start preparing for the following season.

Say UT had snuck into a bowl game and we had a senior QB in place that had been "adequate". Is it better to have the next QB getting some quality reps? Or Is the Sr letting his team down?

You used to hear about players getting insurance policies in case of injury. I assume some still do, though I can't recall hearing of it recently.

Bowl attendance is already down, and I doubt people were falling over themselves to go to the Camping World Bowl anyway. NCAA isn't going to say jack because all they care about is the TV money, and right now it's just fine.

They are quitting on the team and fanbase if they voluntarily do not finish the season. I would not have a player like that on my team. It is a character issue.

If it eliminated some of these ridiculous piddling little bowl games, even better.

Well, you wouldn't have to worry about that, because they are graduating. The schools no longer have any power over them at this point.

And technically a person who commits to a team is quitting on the team if they don't voluntarily finish their 4 playing years, since that's what they committed to.

Didn't Kelly 'The Future' Washington duck out of the Wyoming game when we played them in Nashville?

In more recent years, didn't the LSU tailback Fornette skip his final bowl game?
