Will Fulmer be fired if the Vols don't make a Bowl Game?

Personally, I expect a riveting piece from jake and/or lex before the week is out.

They have a way of summing up, in well-written prose, what some of us...or most of us...believe.

As for me, I think the 2008 season, thus far, has been a "Cliff Notes" of what is wrong with UT football. Go back to 1999, when as the defending national champions, we first saw the signs that UT football was starting a downhill slide.

2001. Only the SEC Championship, and a wounded LSU team, stood between UT and a shot at the BCS Championship.

Another sign. And the first time, since '98, that people began to openly question if this coaching staff really had "the right stuff". We started looking back at the magical season of "98...saw three wins that could have easily been losses...and started to wonder, if only to ourselves, if Fulmer really had the magic.

Since then, there have been a few bright moments. But for every "stunning victory", there have been a handful of "inexplicable collapses". It's only when you step back and look at the last 3, 5, or 7 years that the whole picture is visible.

2008 is a snapshot. Ten years compressed into four games.

UT is no longer a factor. On the national stage...or the SEC...or even the SEC East. Those of you who would point out that UT "won" the SEC East last year would be wise to consider that it's been ten years...ten years... since UT actually WON the SEC.

We didn't win the SEC East. It was handed to us. And we blew our inheritance in the SEC Championship game. Thus continuing a ten year streak of lost opportunities.

Ten years. A decade.

Too long.

Take a look, and listen, to Phil Fulmer's post-game comments, and post-game shows. He looks like exactly what he is: a man defeated. The game, the years, and the losses have taken their toll on him. He is a shadow of his former self. So is UT football.

There's no shame in being a Philip Fulmer fan. I used to belong to that club. But to place your loyalty to Fulmer above your love for UT football is unconscionable.

If that's you...you are not a Vol fan.

I am a Vol fan. Above all.

And it's time for a change at the top.

go vols.

Let me ask you this? You have been a Fulmer supporter if I remember correctly. What do you think about the situation now?

I respect the man and appreciate what he has done for the university. Not just wins and losses but how he tries to do the right things with the young men in his program. This includes the loyalty he has repeatedly shown to his players and staff.

I have tried my best to realize that he is the head football coach and that as fans we don't have the insight to know what is really going on in the program.

That being said, I'm not going to sit here and try and convince anybody that he's still the best person for the job. JC is clearly inept at QB and I personally don't understand why changes haven't been made to correct that situation. Ultimately it falls on CPF to make that change. I just can't believe that we've fallen so far that we don't have a better option at QB.

So again, I'm not calling out anyone who wants a change. You also won't see me trying to rally anyone in his favor. He's a good man but times have been better on the hill.

If I had a nickel for every time someone has stated that he is a good man in the last few weeks, I'd be rich. That is the only defense anyone can come up for him anymore. It's time for him to go.
