... see any carries against Buffalo?

First, I am not comparing him to Demps, but he seemed to do pretty well against us and he is the same height as Devrin.

I'm not bashing Poole or Lane either because our O-Line is atrocious right now. They couldn't open a lane big enough for a 5 year old to fit through most of the time.

I know that video is against HS opponents, but neither Poole nor Lane looked anywhere near that agile in HS.

He is our fastest player right?

I rather him PR and KR than carry the ball. I agree, we all need to see what he's got, but then again, Poole needs to prove he has it, and I think that will be tested in the Buffalo game. Otherwise, the OL (IMO) is to blame.

Eh, outside of a few plays maybe designed to get him in space I really have a hard time seeing him playing a whole lot of straight-up offense, especially in the short term. As for the rest of it while Young is fast (if there's somebody else on the team with a verified time under 10.80 for 100m I don't know who it is) but Demps is on another level of fast. He's a member of the sub-10 100m club. (albeit wind-aided IIRC)

I think a much better comparison is Young and Brandon James as opposed to Demps or Rainey.

If he was from GA or FL, he would be a great talent, but he's a Tennessee recruit, overrated IMO. Just because he's shifty and fast isn't enough to make him effective, so he should only be used on special teams.

Assuming he can take hits from Kickoffs and Returns and beat players with his speed/shiftyness then why would he not play RB?

Just asking...

If he's skilled enough to return punts, I see no reason why Chaney wouldn't be interested in getting him involved in the offense.

You're right - D Young could have been blind-folded with his hands and feet tied together while Johnson gets a free shot - they do those kind of drills alot

I highly doubt AJ Johnson caught D Young while he was out in space. My bet is that the o line was doing their usual jumble up and act confused while the linebacker clobbers the running back routine.

The thing that impresses me the most about DY is not only his speed, but his field vision and the ability to change direction. Poole does not run hard until he is in space and he only cuts to the right. Not hard for defenses to recognize this on film.

Maybe UT shouldn't Pull the guards so much..... They don't seem to know who they are after. The shade blocker is always overwhelmed and the play is blown up.

What is the actual size of Demps? I know our O Line is not run blocking very well but when they do open a how, Tauren Poole is not getting there. When he does get is open space, he almost always makes the wrong cut. Rainey is an example of what a great back can do and we are going to have to get one. I don't know if Marlin Lane is the answer or not. Florida had a below average passing game and Rainey & Demps were still able to be huge playmakers. Can you imagine if Rainey or say Lattimore were in the backfield with Tyler at QB? Unstoppable. We have to get a difference maker. Randall Cobb was one and look at Kentucky now without him. True, defensive linemen are a premium but we have to get that Chuck Webb type running back.

So what is the final story here, is the plan to use Devrin on punt returns this Saturday?

He is listed as one of the starters on punt and kick returns. I would guess by Thursday we will know for sure.

Why can't you just let us bicker among ourselves in peace.

Go find a thread that is talking about Devrin Young returning punts.

At this point, I think Chaney and CDD would try anything to have a rushing attack. Not sure if they try him there but why not at this point. Otherwise we may be at negative rushing yards against LSU and possibly S. Carolina. Speed is one thing but quick change of direction is also very important in a running back. Maybe a guy fast enough to reverse fields and make a big play when there is no running room.
