Will BYU be a test?

Looking at our schedule it seems Florida is our first “tough” game. But will BYU be a test? They went 7-6 last year I believe but obviously in a lesser conference. I’ll be attending this game so I’m hoping we destroy them but I want to see our vols tested.

While they will probably be considered a test. they should only be considered a open book multiple choice pop quiz. If our team is properly prepared, it shouldn't be close.

BYU will give Tennessee all they want and possibly more.
This game will be a great test for Pruitt's charges

I think it will be a decent test for us and be fairly competitive for maybe a half. If it was a Butch coached team it would be close longer than it should be, but not with this staff. Our size will take a huge toll the first half and we will have a huge speed and talent advantage. BYU will keep it close for a little while with their Defense, playing hard and being well coached and not killing themselves with mistakes. But the humidity, long flight, huge size, speed and talent difference will become noticable towards the end of the 1st half and beyond.

BYU was very bad offensively, just as we were. But the big difference is who each played. Obviously TN was in an elite conference and played a very difficult schedule. BYU plays a pretty soft schedule from top to bottom. So their offensive struggles was against not great teams or great players week in and out. They do have a a good QB that has some mobility, so obviously we will have to defend against that. But very few playmakers and not a lot of experience.

Definitely not overlooking them, we aren't good enough yet to overlook anybody. But at end of the day we should win by 17+.

Yes it’ll be our first real metric imo.

A mediocre team in a bad conference vs a bad team in a good conference. Could be a “good game” but hopefully we show signs of having some of that “welcome to the SEC” kind of fight and it’s a blowout.

I think BYU and UAB will both be tests. I honestly think those teams could have beaten us last year. Don’t be surprised if one, if not both go down to the wire.

Do you not keep up dude? Vanderbilt has beaten the crap out of us 3 years in a row by an average of 18 points per game. And you have the arrogance to tell us we know nothing all the time. Jeez.

A blip. In 20 years we will be laughing and wondering how that happened.

I’m looking for a score along the lines of 28-14 Vols. It won’t be a rout but should be a great game. The Mocs are the following weekend? TN should crush them something like 38-0....

I am sure he meant you know mostly nothing

Sure, BYU will be a test. Hell, any game (no matter the opponent) should be considered a test in that even if our opponent is outsized and outmatched in athletic ability, our team can't afford to phone one in and expect a win to come easily. App State, Wyoming, etc come to mind. It may or may not be a test in terms of athleticism or position depth, but it (and every game) will be a test of how well the team (coaching staff included) can resist complacency.

I see the game coming down the the matchup of corners vs receivers. I think the BYU front 7 can hold their own against anything UT throws at them. I worry about our secondary. I also see BYU's receivers having a hard time getting open against the UT corners.

BYU returns a very experienced O-Line so if they can establish any kind of running game then it will be a real dog fight.
If UT shuts the BYU run down (I know you have highly touted LB's) it could be a long day for the Cougs.

I'm hoping our O-Line can get the push needed to make it a great game.

Either way, I'm excited to come out and experience Neyland Stadium.

We should be approaching every game as a test. Our opponents' goal is simple...to beat us. Every player on the field should take this personally.

You don't have to be the best player on the field. You just have to be better than your opposing player.

Yes. BYU beat Wisconsin, on the road, last season. They can sneak up on you.

Fixed your post.

After the last 10 years, we can sleep on nobody. We don't even know yet if this team is better than last year. Being a year older with some promising but inexperienced freshmen tells us nothing. BYU will be a test.

Who have we lost to when we were favorites the last 10 years? BYU should be a win, an easy win if we are to have an 8-10 win season. I predict 10-3 so I'm calling it an easy win.

Not saying they can't beat UT... but Wisconsin is tailor made for BYU due to style of play and athleticism. Wisconsin is basically a bigger version of BYU.

I've watched a few games now.

Wilson is a very good QB and could play in the SEC imo.

Bushman the TE and Pau'u were the most impressive receivers to me. The others are the sort of "possession" type receivers you think of when you think of BYU.

You think of them as a passing team but when they don't run well... they don't win. They lose almost any time they don't average 4 ypc... They will stubbornly run the ball and only give up when getting blown out while thinking they still have a chance to catch up.

They have decent athletes in the secondary. They are big and fairly strong on the DL but not particularly athletic outside of a 6'9" monster named Kaufusi... who graduated... not to be confused with his brother and two cousins who still play for them. Their LB's look solid against the run but should be a weakness UT can exploit in the passing game.

They pursue well laterally for the most part and fill lanes. Oddly, teams seemed to do better running at them. It may have to do with their spacing to stop the wide stuff.

In short, UT is more athletic. If the Vols play disciplined to match BYU's discipline... it should go well for us.

And......they will not have the element of surprise in their favor, after last season's defeating Wisconsin. CJP will not fall for that crap.
This needs to be a statement game.
