"I'm really lucky to be here. I understand that and believe that. I feel that in my heart. I'm fortunate," Wilcox said. "A million people would kill to get to do what I get to do. And sometimes in this business, things come up. You really try to have to take the emotion out of it, which is hard to do. All I can say is that I'm very thankful and humbled to be here, because this is a phenomenal place. And we've got some work to do, but this is, I don't know, I'm lucky to be here. I really feel that, and I'm lucky to get to work with these guys.

"These are really good coaches, and we're doing things the right way. The kids are coming with us, and it's not always going to be easy, but the kids are buying in and there's a lot of belief in what we're doing in the staff rooms from the top down, and that's important to me.
"

quote from Wilcox in article by John Brice

ya think he feels lucky to be here?

Damn, you're good.

After reading that I wonder why he and Chuck Smith didn't get along. Neither can speak very well. Seems like that could have been some common ground for them.

I think they split ways at the intersection of competency and professionalism.

it falls on deaf ears. I agree with the poster that says he probably wants out..before anyone gets their panties in a wad that is a legit conclusion based on his mumbo-jumbo interview. You know the man who doth protest to much.........

That guy was being sarcastic. He thinks it is laughable, after reading this quote that anyone would believe that Wilcox would want out. I kind of agree with you, however: It does seem like an odd quote. Like he is about to turn the corner and say something negative, but he never does.

all we can do is take him at his word until his actions show other wise. winning will cure any discontent among fans or at least it should.

I will wager that it was more of Brice's poor writing rather than Justin's speech. I've had the opportunity to meet Justin, and he is a very well-spoken man. If any of you get the chance to talk to him or Sirmon for a few minutes after a practice, in a restaurant, etc... do so because they are very friendly, and you can tell they love their job.

I think Wilcox was trying to say that things are much better after Chuck Smith left and that he may have moved on last year if it wasn't for Chuck's departure. There was a huge power struggle between the two of them and long distance between philosophies. I truly believe Wilcox feels he's lucky to be here. Who woudn't? This is East frickin Tennessee baby, it doesnt' get any better than that.

There definitely was a power struggle, but Chuck doesn't even know how to spell philosophy much less have his own.

The Chuck has made some mutual decisions that the Chuck doesn't necessarily agree with. But, make no mistake about it, the Chuck is VFL, for life, IMOFL.

My favorite part of the quote was "we're doing things the right way." As far as the UTjr thing, I have no idea if he turned it down, was turned down, or for that matter, if he was even offered. I do believe he is smart enough to know another lateral move(as far as title and position go anyway) would have been somewhat of a mistake if he has ambitions of being a HC. If he can help Tennessee turn the corner on their way back to the top by crafting a top 5 defense out of what he has been handed in a relatively short time, he will be considered for every HC opening out there. I, for one, think he can, and will, do just that.

It was the smart move...going to tx and starting over again would've set him back atleast one more year.
