Wilcox doubters....

I don't think we will have to worry about him getting caught with his pants down against the spread option like Monte did last year.

I think he is a good hire as well, but I am hesitant. A couple of years ago Dave Clausen looked like a good hire, a young energetic guy, who was up and coming. Coming from other small conferences to the SEC, is checkers to chess. Again I think it was a solid hire, but we shall see how it translates. Good research though!

I am going to be optimistic about this. I hope Wilcox is the best DC we've ever had, and is in the top 5 defensively each year. Realistically, his defense last year faced Oregon the first game, and TCU the last. In between, they faced the likes of (in order) Miami O., Fresno St., Bowling Green, UC Davis, Tulsa, Hawaii, San Jose St., LA. Tech., Idaho, Utah St., Nevada, and New Mexico St. When he puts up the same numbers against OUR competition, I'll fall in line. To earn MY respect, he and all the coaches have to earn it, I won't blindly follow. Now, you can call me a troll, Debbie downer, non UT football fan, or scorch me.....I don't care. I plan on supporting and cheering for this team as always.

agreed, they all got my support, but will only believe it when I see it!

I'm pretty sure 75% of the teams they played did not have a 4* recruit. How many 4 stars or even 3* did LA tech have, your argument holds as much water as my wife's panties, and she's a big gal.

That doesn't even make sense. Everybody knows that WAC doesn't compare to the SEC but BS has played and beaten some good teams.

when considering what BS did on defense you must consider how prolific these offenses are at these schools. To finish 14th in the country in defense when they are playing in a conference that seems to rarely play defense is significant. yes, many of the teams they played don't have the talent that UT faces, but neither does BS have the talent the UT has. The bottom line is that Wilcox performed extremely well against teams that had similar talent to his team and even played well the couple of games where they played against teams with superior talent. At least that's the way I see it. If you can coach then you can coach at any level! I'm pleased with the hire.

So? He was going against WAC players, sure, but his own guys were WAC players too. When he goes against SEC players, he'll have SEC players of his own.

All I know is that he seems to be universally regarded highly, he's young and energetic, he's fielded highly ranked defenses every year despite playing in a high-scoring league, and he's held his own against teams with vastly superior talent. Strikes me as a good hire.

I sat with Coach Wilcox at the recruiting celebration today. I must say he seemed very excited and amazed by Tennessee. He flew in last night and was there first thing this morning so things have happened really fast for him.

His eyes were fixed to the video that was on-screen showing our great traditions, one thing I'd like to share when he saw the video of the vol walk was "IS THAT BEFORE THE GAME???". You should have seen his face. It was great, anyways he seems very excited to be here and seems like a great coach.

One observation about Coach Dooley was he seemed to really care about his coaches. All the coaches were really down to earth and very friendly including Wilcox, Cheney, and Dooley which were all in close proximity.

I for one am very excited about this hire after speaking with him.

I hope he gets a chance to check out the stadium soon!!

GO VOLS!!!

I did some light research on Boise St. talent and came up with the following:
Boise St. was ranked 14th last year in total defense, but what exactly does that mean? Not a whole lot until you consider what he had to work with. Over the last 4 recruiting classes, Boise St. has not had one single 4 star recruit on the team. Their recruits over the 4 years averaged 2.3 stars according to Rivals. Their recruiting class over the last 4 years average rank was 75th in ncaa. (For those of you that think that stars don't mean anything, just go back and look at the recruiting classes of the national championship teams over the last decade) This tells me two things about Wilcox: 1.) The man has an eye for talent. and 2.) He can develop the talent he has. Bottom line...Wilcox is a BIG time hire for UT!
I'm originally from NC but I'm a Missourian now... so I'm always in "Show Me" mode. He has a good enough resume to inspire hope.

However if I were to play the devil's advocate with your argument... I'd say that he only played two real teams all year. Oregon and TCU. There's no real reason he shouldn't have posted great numbers. While their star avg was 2.3, what do you think their opponents were?

Wait, there's more. Outside of TCU and Oregon, the combined record of their opponents was 62-86. Seven of the 13 teams they played had winning records and one of the was a FCS school.

I could probably dig up some stats showing the O's they played weren't very good too.

Again, he seems to be a bright young coach that knows his stuff... but there's also reason to be cautious with your optimism.

BSU played 7 of the top 40 offenses in 2009.

First post here guys so take it easy on me. Agreed with most everyone on here that Wilcox is a good hire and I'm definitely excited about it. I really liked what CDD had to say about him in his presser about how the Boise State D always seemed like they were flying around with their hair on fire. Having watched BS a lot lately like everyone else, this seems like a fair assessment and something I'm excited to see our D do. Been a great couple of days to be a VOL. Can't wait for spring practice. GO VOLS!

Well outside of Jackson and Walker he is going to have a defense of about 2.3 star players to work with next year as well.

BSU played 7 of the top 40 offenses in 2009.

And PLEASE stop beating this horse. Most of those offenses were in the WAC and their ranking were a product of playing awful WAC defenses. The others were Oregon who got shutdown by Ohio St, TCU who rang up a whooping 17 against Clemson not to mention Nevada laid a goose egg against an atrocious Notre Dame defense. That stat is severely flawed.

You guys are really gonna be happy with this guy... he's young, players love him, super sharp. Makes crappy recruits look good.

CDD coached against him and must have seen something that caught his eye. I'll give him the bennifit of the doubt. Hope he turns out to be the best. He is ours now and we should support him, or at least givehim a chance. GBO!!!!!!!!!!

My understanding is that he can make 2 star players run 4.3 40's. DD even said that his players play "like their hair is on fire".
