That's why Dexter McCluster beat us last year. EB was just as suspect as the rest of the D against Ole Miss.

Why? Monte was easily one of the top 5 NFL DCs of all time, but he had been out of the college game for a lot of years. I think Monte did a good job last year, but he didn't fair very well against the spread offense. When we played the more traditional pro-style offense like Alabama runs, then Monte was in his comfort zone and it showed. I'm sure if had been back this year, you would probably have seen a marked improvement since a great defensive mind like his would have figured it out.

On the other hand you have Wilcox, who is a young up and coming DC that has shown that he also knows a thing or two about how to run a defense. If we had not snagged him this year, I'm pretty sure that another big name school would have grabbed him next year. Also don't forget that Wilcox has LT from which he can draw knowledge from about the SEC. I think that the defense is going to be in good hands with Wilcox, just as the offense will be with Chaney. If Dooley is half as smart as people make him out to be, then he will let Wilcox and Chaney run their respective squads because they know what they are doing.

I agree. There were times that I was afraid that he was going to hurt a shoulder with the way he used it sometimes.

That hand he was dealt included two first round draft picks and quite a few more pieces as well. I saw nothing spectacular out of our defense last year. It was solid, but i've seen much better defenses at UT with equal or even less talent.

Depth was our main problem last year and likely will be again this year. Biggest problem I had with CMK's Defense last year was the lack of int's... It's not good to have a DL leading the team in ints... at 2... The injuries and the overall lack of talent at the LB position hamstrung CMK, IMO. Hopefully Wilcox can practice what he's preaching and can adjust to the multiple offenses we will see in the years to come.

Two first round draft picks including arguably the greatest defensive player in the SEC in over a decade, that year... with three more players who could easily play their way into first round status.

Monte Kiffin's defense wasn't astounding in large part because he'd only had one offseason to work on it, but Wilcox is certainly capable of meeting last season's performance with the exception of filling the gap Eric Berry leaves. I actually expect Wilcox's defense to perform significantly better versus spread offenses since he's widely regarded as a specialist at defending it.

Dan Williams played his ass off and became a 1st round pick.

You can argue coaching or Williams just deciding he wanted to play, but something made him better.

When was the last time a walk on started at MLB?

Hell, Tennessee went through three MLBs and Thompson was banged up a lot.

With that being said, I'm excited to see what Wilcox will do.

I think he's one of the best DCs around the college game.

I really don't think that is true at all. By the end of the year the depth was so bad that it was pure smoke and mirrors with some prayer thrown in.
