Wide open QB battle

Article I read about him said he had a terrible Oline his last yr at Appy and was always having to scramble throwing to avoid sacks. So if this is true his int rate may be a bit overrated. Also read he was scheduled to be the starter this season at UCLA before the Nico thing.

I defer to Hype to pick the best starter but lets not underrate Joey before he has a chance to prove himself.
hes not ready to hear that

Same could be said about Merk. Merk was definitely recruited heavier and ranked way higher than Joey. So the question is what's gonna prevail, talent or experience? And that's what fall camp is for and CJH has to decide.

IMO its JAs job to lose, anything else is coach talk. He would have to come out and really lay and egg in Atlanta vs Syracuse.
Trying to imagine that happening literally. Hopefully, he would go into the injury tent, or Mike Keith is going to have a bizarre first day on the job.

we do bc its clear you didnt watch the offense he was in during the 2023 season and how it was diff in 2024. Terrible OL play, among the worst in the country, scheme was a little diff and zero real playmakers bc they all got poached prior.

its ok
How many interceptions did he throw in 2023?

Let me answer that for you...the same amount Nico and Milton threw combined in 2023 amd 2024.

So yeah, giving scoring opportunities to your opponent while taking them from your team is a certain way to have a mediocre season.

Again, idc who starts, i will be cheering them on. But i will be surprised if Merklinger doesn't start against Syracuse.

It seems to me that Vol fans seem to be underating Jake, the guy that has been here and knows the offense. And was a highly valued recruit coming out of HS

So far in his career he's a turnover machine. I'm not sold
Folks are saying that Heupel can coach the INTs out of Aguilar's play, but he cannot do that kind of personal work over the summer. There is not much time for Aguilar to learn the book and how to execute without making mistakes. It could happen, but it might be more than we should expect. Aguilar was not in a good situation last year, so that concern might not be as real as the numbers indicate. QBs are going to make bad plays. The question is how many. There are good teams in this league, and turnovers must be held near zero to win the hard games.

And you still don't know how anyone performed.

Tell it to Austin Price. And Cooper Mays and the other Olinemen from 2021. It’s been so widely reported, it’s discussed as a given at this point. But since it doesn’t fit your narrative, I’m sure you’ll say Price, Mays, and those other players are wrong too.IMG_2402.jpeg

The ability to read defenses and even the ability to physically perform changes with time. Some peak early and/or reach a level from which they don't progress whereas others mature more slowly but continue get better with time.

No way to know yet.

It better be a wide open competition right now. If CJH already has Aguilar pencil in as the starting quarterback, that means Merck and Mac should both be told to leave. He clearly has no intentions on ever starting them if that's the case.

Nah man, Appy state's QB who threw 24 picks in 2 seasons and had no major offers in the portal, out of Juco, or out of HS is gonna come in and light the SEC up because he threw for some yards. LOL

Kevin Simon said today on the Sports Source youtube video that Jake simply isnt ready yet. He said Aguilar will be the starter due to his 2 years starting college experience. I have posted here a couple times that I thought Jake would be the starter this season. Apparently, I was wrong. I trust the evaluation of a VFL that played in the NFL for a good while over my previous opinion. Simon has attended practices and seen the team up close this spring, while I have not. He has also played at the highest level and been around top SEC QBs enough to know talent when he sees it. I will defer to him.

Of course he has the upper hand at the starting job, he didn’t come here just to “compete” with one year left when he could have started at a number of lesser programs.

Yep, IMO we didn't pay him 1.2 to get a safe back-up. If Hype had already decided that Merk or G-Mac were ready to start in the SEC I believe he would had taken reliable safe Notre Dame back-up Steve Angeli they looked at and picked JA over him. I think Heupel is taking a shot and he wants to win now not re-build. It may not work out and Merk or G-Mac will have to start and I believe if it works out that way and JA is not SEC ready, it will be a transitional year of around 6-6 record.
