Something a little funny. I met a Vol fan the other day in Florida and we were talking about all of the different coaching staffs. She really likes Barnes, Caldwell, and Vitello and said they put forth a very good image for the school. When it came to CJH, She said, “I think Heupel is a good coach but he’s a terrible slob, needs to lose weight, needs to shave every day, and do something about that damn cough”. I just laughed.

Josh Heupel is a bit of a throwback. He's not a media personality who will tweet clever snarky lines or snap at journalists or dress for interviews. He's a football coach who isn't built for TV.

Josh could use a publicist, someone who thinks of nothing but "how this looks and how it plays in the media" and knows nothing about coaching. I'm a little surprised Danny White hasn't hooked him up with someone to manage "Coach Heupel's TV image" or maybe he has and Josh said F that. Somewhere a UT publicist shakes their head every time Coach steps to the podium.

As for Coach Heupel's weight and cough, he should address that for his family, not UT, and I hope he has.

As an aside, I bet the guy you met in FL was stylishly dressed for the beach or bar or wherever and probably pretty personable. That's America. Personality over substance will get you a long way.

You’re right. Heupel started the guy who got outplayed in practice. He’s just not the QB evaluator you are.

If you want to pretend that Hooker earned the job by outplaying Milton in practice in the face of every report we got back then by everyone who was there, you do you. You’re here to argue and criticize. You’ve made that abundantly clear. The world is full of people like you.

Given Heupel’s history he already knows who his starter is and will skew the fall to ensure the team supports what he has decided. Simply go back and reread what Heupel was saying and doing over his “open” QB competition between Hooker and Milton. We were lucky Hooker stuck with us when Heupel put Milton over him. Hooker was clearly the better QB once the lights went on and Milton went down to injury and never got his job back until Hooker left campus.

For Heupel when he recruited Milton. For the team and fans watching how Hooker performed as a starter. Hooker’s performances forced Heupel to get on board the Hooker train even though he showed up late to the station.

I don't understand your reply. Let me rephrase my question.

At what point in time did you and almost everyone else realize that Hooker was the better quarterback?

After watching him as an experienced QB with end of game possession and behind NOT run out of bounds on 4th down.

Hendon Hooker wasn't a turnover machine at VT. He threw 7 INTs through 2 seasons at Tech, playing against much better competition than Aguilar, who threw 24 through 2 seasons.

It's interesting that your last paragraph, if you replace Aguilar with Nico, is almost exactly what we said on VN about Nico replacing Milton.

"We're going to see a QB who can run the offense and won't be a placekeeper QB like Joe. Nico can execute the offense like Joe never could....."

Same song, just a key change.

And three QBs back it was great. And there is no reason why it won’t happen again.

So you think if Heupel starts the guy who threw for 2992 yards in junior college and 6760 yards in Division 1, rather than the guy who has thrown for 48 yards in his college career then something is wrong?
I would agree that something is wrong in that scenario, but it would not be Heupel.

He's thrown for some yards sure but don't act like he's some world beater. He threw 24 picks at appy state and transferred to UCLA. There's a reason the big time schools didn't come calling. He might have more experience than Merk but I highly doubt he has more talent. Merk was rated pretty high and had multiple SEC offers, UGA included.
