Why wouldnt a big man want to come to UT?

I dont mean to knock any of the recruits for their decisions to further their education and bball careers at other respective schools, but i would think that atleast ONE big time big man would want to come into a situation where he could possibly start right away for a potential final four team... or maybe im just buggin... your thoughts?

Lack of previous success by UT with Big men, Very few "Big Men" will fit into Pearls system, In a couple of years it'll be a different story but right now Some recruits still consider UT a flash in the pan---See Jerry Green era

we almost beat the national runner up twice this season and made it to the sweet 16 with a freshmen-laden team WITHOUT a big man, so, obviously a big man isn't really a necessity for this team. They proved they can win without a big man, and Pearl's system functions better without a big man camped out under the basket.

UT is still good enough to make it to the final four with what we got, but if we seriously want to get into Championship contention then i believe we will need some sort of presence under the basket

I know we live and die by the 3, but I'd like to see some slamin and jammin on some of those missed shots. I'd feel a lot better if we had a 7 footer under the rim to get an easy 2 on a missed shot. He doesn't have to get up the court all the time. How many quick 3's did we take with no one even under the basket. We got one of the best teams in the nation, but now we are at the point to where we need to position our team to win it all. Ramar, Chism & Crews improve the ft's and a big man under the rim takes us from a top 15 to a chance at a national championship team.

Let's see when Wimp Sanders was at Alabama they never had a 7 footer but always led the league in rebounds. What does that say?

What about Reggie Johnson? Dyron Nix?

A 6-8 to 6-10 guy that can jump in college is better than a 7 footer. A 7 footer really helped OSU win that National Championship, oh wait Florida won it without a 7 footer

Florida had a 6-11 center.. a 6-10 PF.. and a 6-9 SF.. u cant tell me that size didnt help them...

Oden wasn't out there for most of the game to rebound due to foul trouble.

It's also easier to get defensive rebounds when they are throwing bricks up like crazy in the 1st half.. and I think we got a decent amount of offensive rebounds. Also, we were sinking a lot of shots so they didn't have as many d-rebounds.

Yeah a team can have a special season and make a deep run. We were 2 pts. away from doing it this year. For UT to have a dominate team like FL where we would pretty much know that the only team that's going to beat us is ourself, then we would need a true center under the rim. We can run and put another teams big man in foul trouble, but eventually it's not going to work all the time - LSU for example. I would rather have one, then not have one.

The 7 footer has to be under the basket to get the rebound and stick it in. Therefore, he does have to get up the court to get in position, or else be ineffective.

Quick post players with stamina fit UT's system, not slow post players (even if they're hulking 7 footers). It's built around beating your man up the court, beating them to a position, and creating good shots and rebound opportunities quickly - not slowing it down and waiting for everyone to get up court.

They don't have to be hulks, just a true athletic centers that can neutralize the dominant centers that we will face to win a National Championship. Wingate did fairly well during Pearls first year and he sucked but he did take out the other teams big man to where they were hardly ever a factor. Pearl's inbound defense would be so much better with a larger player.

That's fair. I agree that Wingate would've helped a lot b/c he had the size and stamina to keep up.

Don't discount Chism here. He could be putting on some muscle in the offseason, and he's about as close to the perfect low-post defender (and press inbounds defender) as you can get. He's smart, he can run the court, and he is almost big enough to handle most players out there.

That said, there will always be times where you just don't have the physical presence to neutralize someone like Oden, and you therefore find other ways to win.

Yeah, I'm not counting Chism out. He's 6'9" as a Freshman. He might grow another inch. He will be a awesome player in the SEC. I just don't know if he has that kick @$$ mentality that you see from a dominant center. He seemed to get frustrated sometimes and stepped out for the 3 instead of staying down low. I wish him and Crews could swap bodies. Again he was only a freshman and hasn't been in a college offseason a full year yet. I think he will be more aggressive next year.

We will have a great team next year and a very good season. I'm just looking for small weaknesses. And if we had a true center, then I think the team would be much better to win a National Championship. There is a possibility we win one without, but wouldn't you rather have one one your roster than not. I think that's why Pearl is taking a chance on Brian Williams. It the best he could get for this class.

yea i mean we did play against arguably one of the best college centers to come around for a while and we handled him pretty well, so i wouldnt worry too much about being able to handle big men becuase its highly unlikely we will play too many big man like Oden

So when Chism grows one more inch to the mythical 6'10 mark he will be good to go, huh? I do not understand why people get bent out of shape thinking a player must be 6'10 or 7'0. Do you seriously understand the difference between 6'9 and 6'10? Or, shoot 6'9 and 7'0 for that matter. Go ahead and get a ruler out. Go ahead, thats not rhetorical. Now find the one, two, and three inch marks. Examine that and tell yourself...this is what I think makes the difference in a quality post presence. I think we need another post presence to win big. Does that mean the other post presence needs to be over' 6'10, no. He just needs to be a shot blocker. We need a Ben Wallace 'type' that would fit perfectly into Pearl's system. And, he is nowhere near 7'0.

Chism can be the physical banger on the post that we need. We need an opposing post presence on defense that has great hops and great timing to block shots.

Yes, true, but most of the shot blocker top players are around 6'10 or 6'11, so thats where a lot of it fits in. Crews could be a good shot blocker.. if he was 3-4 inches taller, 6'7 just doesn't cut it when it comes to that..

I think we missed out big time by not landing JJ Hickson.. he's listed anywhere from 6'8-6'10 and is athletically gifted and can jump, players like that are the shot blockers we need. Although he plays more of a PF rather than a true center spot so maybe he wasn't the perfect answer but could've made an impact with our lack of depth.

I believe we are all getting bent out of shape with feeling we need a big man because we know how big Chism at 6'9 played this year and how he was sort of ineffective against bigger guys, but playing big in the low post is not Chism's style of play, he is more of a play facing the basket type forward that can knock down the 3.. Crews is only 6'7, and i think we can all agree that Childress is no Ben Wallace... so its just the type of big man we get and how he plays that matters the most not neccesarily size, because Barkley is only 6'6 so height has really nothing to do with it, its just the style of play that a big man has and we dont have any big guys that have the style of play of banging in the post effectively

Again, your evaluation of Chism is not completely accurate. On offense he prefers the perimeter right now because he is not comfortable with his offense under the basket. But, on defense he is known for his on the block defense. That is how he made a name for himself in AAU. He plays excellent post defense on the block. But, we need a shot blocker to go down there along with him.
