Why would a coach want to come to UT?

Um...Let's ask Bobby Petrino, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Les Miles. Money, Prestige, competeing against the best.

Nick Saban is got a ridiculous contract so he does not count in the discussion. If we are willing to give somebody the contract that he got, then yes we could get about any coach thats available. But there is no chance we give a coach a contract like that. Les Miles was not a big time coach when he took the LSU job (and the LSU job is a better job than UT). Urban Meyer took possibly the best job in the country. Bobby Petrino just needed a job. Did you see what was going on in Atlanta? So, in other words, lets look at it this way. If UT and Florida were both open when Meyer was looking, which job does he take? If UT and LSU are both open when Miles was looking, which job does he take? If Alabama is offering what they offered and UT offers what they are going to offer, do you think Saban chooses Alabama or UT? Petrino is only one on that list that would have chosen UT over his present job. And I think most on here agree we are glad he is not the coach at UT.

My point is I don't think coaches are going to be frightened of the other coaches in this league to the point that they turn down millions to take a good job in another conference. I don't think top coaches are sitting around going I'll take the Wisconsin job because I don't think I can beat Meyer and Richt to win the SEC E or Good grief even if I beat them I still have to take on Saban and Miles to win the SEC Championship. I don't think top coaches think that way, especially if the resources are in place to compete.

I am saying that I dont think we are going to pay much more than some of these coaches are already making. And they are in much more "comfortable" jobs. Absolutely some coaches think about the competition of the coference they are going into. Its has a huge affect on job security. Obviously, some coaches are enough of a competitor to take the challenge. But, not all of them. If a coach is already making 1.5 million or more than he is not going to get a huge pay raise comings to UT. We are not going to pay Saban-esque money to a new coach.

I can't stand people like the OP, not going to make it far in life with attitudes like that. First Knoxville is not a dump visit some other top 10 football schools every been to LA?
Second it takes a type A personality to be a winning coach and a winner wants to go against and beat the best not hang around, make a good paycheck and ride off into the sunset. Get off of this inferior attitude man.

Winning solves a lot of these kinds of problems. Thats why we want a new coach. I havent been to knoxville in quite a long time. I would expect that a lot of fans that dont live close enough to get to the stadium within a couple of hours dont bother to go. The more wins the team has the more people want to come to the games. The more money the spend and put into the program.
No guts no glory.. You have to remember strength of schedule is a factor in the bcs calculations. Why else do you think ND is 6-2 and still not even ranked. why did Hawii and bosie state not get their chances at the NC game? In order to be the best you have to play the best. I dont know of any coach (except for fulmer maybe) is satisfied with just being ok. Someone from the sec could very well win the the National title this year. This would be the 3rd year in a row the sec has won. I would think that a coach would want to play in a conference where he might have a legit chance at a championship.

LSU went through a number of coaches before landing Saban, and then continuing with Miles. Bama went through a number of coaches before landing Saban. I would prefer to not go that route, but I'm pointing out that if it ends up that way it is both A) not that uncommon and B) not a whole lot different than what we have now only at least we'd be trying something new. I don't think we have the deep pockets of some of these other schools either, but neither do I believe that we have to hire a $5-6 million dollar coach to start winning again.

It's not worth firing Fulmer if they don't get it right the first time. There can be no 2nd guessing after the fact, or it will only further damage the program.

It's worth firing Fulmer if for no other reason than trying something new. If LSU and Alabama can recover from their poor decisions so can we, if anything they have proven that all it takes is one good coach. I'm just saying that it may take more than one round of coach hiring. Hopefully it doesn't, but if we fail to get it right the first time it isn't the end of the world.

1) Butch Davis currently coaches the baby-blue clad UNC Tarheels, who haven't been relevant in. . . .well. . . .forever, unless you count basketball.

2) The renovations of downtown and the waterfront far outweigh the failure of Cumberland Avenue. "The Strip" has long relied on underage consumption and college student patronage. The closing of O'Charley's only limits the number of places that our players might be found illegally consuming alcohol. I seriously doubt that our new head coach will mourn the loss of the Last Lap while dining at Ruth's Chris.

3) If you think that the parking lots around UT are filled with "trash and broken glass," then you should visit the spaces held by season-ticket holding Vol Faithful. We show up at 8 AM on game days, cook for 20-30 of our closest friends, and welcome all who bleed Orange. Welcome to reality.

4) We have some of the best facilities in the country, a nearly-unlimited supply of VASF money, and a location and climate to rival any program in the country.

Any questions?

Word.

...winning a NC every 5 years is...AND THATS WHAT SOME FOLKS CALL A BAD SEASON...if we dont ...well the season is lost....I couldnt give a **** about NCs...SEC championships is where it is at IMO

I don't think its unreasonable to expect to win a championship within a ten year period. Unrealistic expectations, wow you must have a different meaning for it. Yeah money will fix it.

A championship of any kind, who's asking for NC? Certainly not me. I would gladly settle for a SEC championship.

I guess if all you expect is mediocre, bad football, that is all you are going to get. There's no reason Tennessee can't land a Butch Davis calibre coach.

I would Like to Ask a Question, I think I may have asked it before, but here I go again.

If Butch Davis ot Lane Kiffen are such great coaches the why are they out of a Job?

Butch Davis is gainfully employed as the head football coach at UNC. Kiffen is debatable, but was ousted after about a season and a few games in the NFL which doesn't prove a whole lot about either his inability or ability to coach.
