First of all, Tennessee is one of the most tax advantaged states in the country to live in. If Kentucky's coach made the same amount of money as Tennessee's coach, by the time he got done paying the pole cats in Frankfort, the city and the county taxes he'd make about 12% less money. May not sound like much, but on 3 million bucks, that's a hell of a lot of money.
Secondly, Knoxville is a pretty reasonable place to live relative to other places given property values and other costs of living. Not that someone in that income category cares that much about it.
East Tennessee is a great place to live. There's plenty of fishing, hunting, mountains, etc. The climate is pretty moderate, not miserable in the summer like a Florida and not freezing tail cold like a Michigan in the winter. Yeah, I know, it's cold right now, but it's not snowing either.
As far as the job goes, it's UT, it's a nationally prominent SEC football school. Can a top coach prove his talent coaching Boise State? No, who's on their schedule? Yeah, there are other SEC schools with less pressure. Mississippi State comes to mind, maybe Ole Miss, Vandy, Arkansas. Where's it going to be easier to recruit quality players? UT or one of the SEC door mat schools? Maybe an Oregon? Fresno St? Baylor?
Look at the coach's pay scale? Who pays better on average than the top SEC schools? The answer is nobody by a long shot. There's probably 2.5 million per year difference in Tennessee's coach's salary than that of a Wyoming for instance.
Yes, there are other top SEC schools. FL, Ga, Bammer, Auburn, and LSU. Which one of those doesn't pressure the coach to be a winner? Tubberville is on as thin of ice as Fulmer is and Richt is going to have to step up sometime in the near future and quit shooting themselves in the foot with early losses to Vandy or SC. Being the coach at a top school isn't pressure free anywhere. You can be mediocre at Kentucky from now on if you impressivly beat Louisville every other year, but you can't do that at a top tier school in the Big 10, Southwest, SEC, or any school with top expectations.
UT won't have a problem finding a replacement.
