Why we're not through recruiting offensive linemen

With who's here now and who's committed in 2014, we will only have 11 scholarship offensive linemen in 2014. Count them--Jackson, Pair, Crowder, Kerbyson, Posey, Sanders, Kendrick, Wiesman, Coleman Thomas, Orlando Brown, and Ray Raulerson.

We did not sign any offensive linemen in the 2012 class, and that little miscue will come home to roost in 2014 and 2015.

If Butch is planning on running anywhere near 90 offensive plays in a game, it means every offensive linemen will have to play, and probably some walk-ons, too.

I see the choice facing Butch being (1) Recruit more offensive linemen for 2014. (2) Run a slower paced offense.

I also see offensive linemen being a major priority in 2015. That may be why we have already seen Butch take two of them.

Is my thinking reasonable on this?

we will take 1 more OL in this class. more than likely a JUCO if we can

Maybe but DT's are a much bigger concern at the moment. They won't play 10 OL's though

It seems obvious that we won't have the luxury of redshirting Thomas, Brown, and Raulerson next year. If they are not early enrollees, it's going to be really, really hard on them.

I believe they will play everyone who is at all ready. We played primarily with seven guys last year, but my understanding of the new offense is that there will be more subbing.

I'm sure you know more about it than I do though.

Pretty sure we averaged running 75-80 plays on offense per game last year. I doubt an extra 10 plays a game will be that hard to handle for the lighter, better conditioned OLinemen. JMO

I agree. All of these OL are used to the no huddle and will be in primo shape this fall. Shouldn't be an issue, IMO.

Just historically most teams only have about 3 guys who they work in on the OL. Some will play multiple positions.

Maybe so. I suppose we will see this fall how many linemen Butch uses, and that will tell us about next year.

Part of Dooley's problem was not subbing in enough.

I think a big part of our second half collapse is that our guys were playing an entire game's worth of snaps in the first half and weren't conditioned for it and weren't being subbed out enough.

He admitted it after the Florida game but as far as I could tell never did anything to fix it.

This season we had to replace wide receivers and a q.b. and a tight end. Next season, we will need to replace the O-linemen & defensive linemen.

From everything we have been reading, most of the OL will be in shape and running like deers up and down the field. If CBJ plans on running 90 plays he is going to have them conditioned to do such.

Yeah, playing 8 guys a game is pretty solid. If we keep our top 8-9 guys healthy all year we could still be able to redshirt Raulerson, maybe even Brown and Thomas too.

Pretty clear that Blair is the top offensive priority left on the board. After him you have Ruble as the #2 OL on our realistic board. Hubbs has said we're in his Top 2 with FSU.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Wolf ends up at LT. I think he'll make a good TE, but the kid has the frame and ability to develop into a top notch LT a la Aaron Douglas. Who knows how things will end up though
