Why were Kentucky and Vandy switched on the

What I remember is that Vandy didn't want to play Tennessee during Thanksgiving weekend because a lot of their students were away for the holiday, causing even fewer Vandy fans at the game when they hosted UT every other year.

This. This is exactly what I remember it being. Basically, Candy *****ed and moaned about how every other year, they had no fans to travel to Knoxville because of the Thanksgiving break, and that on the alternate years, their own students were gone on break and wouldn't attend home games (and being from Nashville, I'd be willing to be that at least 70% of their students grew up UT fans and still are). Not that it would've mattered anyway, because it's basically another home game every even-numbered year for UT.

First of all, welcome to the board! Secondly, I just booked a trip to Chicago for New Years this year. I'm pretty excited about it. I'll be sure to bring my ski jacket to stay warm! :)

"Tradition." That's actually the way it was pre-1940 so the SEC decided to revert back to Vandy then Kentucky.

I'm not buying it. If "tradition" were important to the SEC, we would be playing Alabama on the third Saturday in October (the way God meant for it to be). They play a conference game now that week, just like we play a conference game now that week. Why not just swap those games, and let us play Alabama?:peace2:

Even after we switched they still only have about 100 fans come to the game. Vandy also stopped having our game at LP Field because there were so many UT fans it was more of a UT home game than Vandy. Losers

You are remembering correctly. This is exactly why it was changed, but it didn't have the effect Vady had hoped. I sure wish they would change it back. I like having our last game in state no matter if we are home at Neyland or at our second home in Nashville.

Yeah, I hope they fix this with the new teams arriving in the SEC.

I miss having Vandy at the end too.

And now they're kind of in no-man's land after the league enacted the rule saying everyone has to play the week before the SECCG....hence their matchup with Wake Forest every year.

It'd make sense to me to switch Tennessee-Vandy back to Thanksgiving, and move the Kentucky-Louisville game back to that weekend too. That way everyone ends with a true rivalry game. Is there a reason Kentucky and Louisville wouldn't want to play in November?

Vandy closes the whole campus including dorms for Thanksgiving so there are hardly any students left in town to attend a game after Thanksgiving.

They recently started to play Wake Forest on the Saturday after Thanksgiving so it appears they're not too worried about student attendance anymore.

They can't fill up that dump of a stadium even on a nice autumn day when everyone is in school. See the Arkansas and Kentucky games for proof. It usually gets filled by the opposing team's fans and in the Arkansas and Kentucky games there were thousands of empty seats. The very few times it is filled is when UT or Bama is playing there and it's 75% Bama and UT fans.

Went two years ago. The cold in Chicago during that time of year was nothing like I have ever felt. It was more the wind whipping around every corner. Other than that, loved Chicago during new years.

I think college football wanted to make the 2nd to the last week of the season "in-state" rivalry week, and the last week "border war" rivalry week. JMO.
