Why we need to support Martin

Buyout seems like a piddly amount compared to the amount of revenue at stake if people lose interest and stop going to the games and buying hotdogs. A packed arena for every home game would definitely make a buyout worth the trouble.

If CCM is brought back then fans need to quit going to games because this is the only way to get the AD's attention.

there is a lot more financials involved than just a buyout..

the market will be very limited due to financial situation..

Great point! People have this illusion that UT can go out and simply hire anyone they want. They can't! UT is known as a football school and had to pay Butch Jones $3.5MM AND he was the 3-4 choice!

lot of factors are involved. finances are a huge issue. the department can't just continue to pay buyouts every year.. Hamilton affects still being felt..

So you think he's retained and given an extension regardless of what happens the rest of the year?

The length of the extension varies depending on how this team finishes though I'm guessing?

Unfortunately, I think the ship has sailed on support for Cuonzo. It's the "guy after the guy" phenomenon. Very hard for any coach who immediately follows a beloved coach to have wide-spread support from the fans. No matter what he does, he'll never be "that" guy, and heaven help him if he struggles or underachieves. It really is too bad for him, but particularly for guys like McRae and Maymon, both of whom have laid it on the line for UT. It's a shame that their careers have to end under such a cloud. I hope for their sake that we make the tourney and win a game or 2.

It's been pointed out to me that we don't need the black curtains anymore since we installed black seats. That's a plus anyways.

And that, unfortunately, is how UT tends to address issues/problems... by looking at the wrong end of the problem.

But right now, Martin is the leader of the time. Don't understand how you can "support the team" but still call for the leader's head. Especially at such a critical point in this season.

Leader- a person who commands a group or organization (via websters).

Not someone who sits in a chair, head between their knees muttering nonsense, which honestly sounds a lot like my great grandmother who lives at the local nursing home. Wonderful lady, truly remarkable person, nicest woman on earth but not someone I would call to coach my son's basketball team.

Edited for grammar (spell check )

Leader: a guiding or directing head.

Now, if you really feel that Martin only sits in his chair all game every game, instead of giving directions, (hey look, a directing head), you must sleep through 35+ minutes of every game. Or distracted by the shiny keys.

Interesting Martin fact:
Cuonzo Martins ranks 3rd (60%) in SEC win percentage behind Billy Donovan and John Calipari, among active SEC coaches.

Interesting fact. Hmmm? Must mean that the rest of the SEC teams aren't doing as well.:dunno:
Guess that means he'll stay based on that. How about recruiting? Guess the Gators and Wildcats will have better recruiting the next couple of years and the Vols will get left overs in the SEC-third don't hack it in my opinion.:ermm::bad:

If he goes on a run in the NCAAT (yeah I know, unlikely but still), he could still turn around the fanbase.

I honestly still think there's still enough that are in that "he needs to go but I can still be swayed" crowd that could turn his fortune. His biggest plus is he's not a jerk, and it's easier to "forgive" a nice guy. Dooley was a jackass, so I think it was easier for fans to be done with him earlier, as was Todd Raleigh.

The next 2 weeks are huge for him.

I agree he could turn things temporarily w/ some of the fans, but from here on, (meaning next year) every loss will be followed by cries of "we should've gotten rid of him last year". Probably the best outcome would be for us to finish strong this year, win a game or 2 in the tourney, and have Cuonzo decide to move on on his own to a place he feels he'd be more appreciated, thus opening the door for us to re-hire Bruce. How foolish would everyone feel if that happened, and Bruce opted to go somewhere else. What then?

I've learned to not set expectations in stone. I think he has put himself in position to be retained. A defeat of Missouri Saturday can very well cinch it for him. Hart has to decide, along with other athletic department objectives, if he can extend him and at what cost. All factors in a retention and/or extension.

Hart can certainly choose to retain without an extension but I find that hard to do.

I'm about 75-25 he is kept right now.

Let me add one thing, for those that aren't familiar with me.

You won't see me voice a position on a coach. I just don't feel like that is for me to say one way or the other publicly. I'm fortunate to know a lot of people inside and outside that athletic department and count them as friends. For that reason, I do not wish to speak badly of a particular coach. I try to limit comments on a coach from a positive standpoint also.

I do try to share data on what I think is happening within the athletic programs as I'm aware of things. Lot of it is my opinion based on what I hear (which could be wrong as well as right).

I don't believe I've made any statements on Martin for or against retention. Statements I've made are based on what I believe the thinking is at UT.

I don't have to support or anyone I don't want to. Win a few ball games and everyone wants to crown him Coach of the year.

Impressive win last night. If they had been playing that way the whole year, we would be discussing where the Vols will be seeded and what region instead of arguing whether or not Martin needs to be retained. Just cheer on the Vols and the rest will work out accordingly. If Martin makes a sweet 16 run, then he will win some of the fanbase back, IMO.

On another note, one can support Martin without discrediting what Pearl accomplished during his tenure at UT. To discredit his success is just utterly ridiculous. Had Martin had the same success of making the tourney and winning games this fanbase would be worshipping the ground he walks on just as the case was with Pearl. So it's understandable that the fans have high expectations because they deserve to enjoy the success after everything that has happened the last few years between the football program and such.:twocents:

Never liked the hire of ZO to begin with, and I not only go off of the loses this year but I also count the first two years of no tournament.

You are aware they weren't projected to be in the tourney either of his 1st 2 years, aren't you? If they hadn't over-achieved and made a run at the tourney each year, then it wouldn't be an issue. People are hold being snubbed by the selection committee against Cuonzo. I agree there is plenty to be disappointed about this year, but not the previous 2.

So, when they play .500, that's the expectation and winning a few games in a row is overachievement? What coach wouldn't love that?!:eek:hmy:

I think they underachieved in the first half to 2/3rds of the last three seasons. For whatever reason, CCM doesn't seem to bring the sense of urgency to the team until their backs are against the wall. I don't know if he doesn't have the sense of urgency himself or if he has some fear of burning them out too early. Whatever the reason, there was no excuse for it this year with a veteran team. He really has to fix that tendency if he wants to be a good head coach.

Somebody needs to review the rules of fractions and percentages.

Don't understand this, the length of the extension will probably be the standard 3 to 4 years. Correct?

Do they give him a raise.

I think the "excuse" this year, if there is one is 3 things:
Maymon not being what he used to be, Hubbs being out, and Barton not stepping in and gelling w/ the rest of the team. Like I said, there is plenty to take issue w/ this year. They have under-achieved and lost some games they shouldn't have. However, since Barton has come into form, they have played much better, granted much of that has come against poor competition, but they struggled to beat, and even lost to, some of these same teams earlier in the year. Saturday should be very interesting, and very pivotal.
