Why we can't pull the plug on Dooley

The only thing he's building is a losing program. What has he built?

That's my point exactly. All of these people arguing that CDD needs to stay another year because if we have to hire another coach it's another 3-4 year rebuilding process are missing the point. I would rather start rebuilding now, then continue to lose with no hope of improvement (lost to Bama by 31 3 straight years) and become even more irrelevant than we already are. I am so tired of losing and if we don't spend some money to hire a coach this program is going to completely crash and burn. I am so tired of watching crappy football and this team isn't very likeable to boot.

I am a devoted fan and while I am confused by the leadership displayed on the field I question some that is on the sidelines.

However, my anger is directed towards the Offensive Coordinator Jim Chaney. I am beginning to wonder if his ability to lead an offense is effective. During his time under Kiffin he had direct leadership from Lane Kiffin himself since old Monte was in charge of defense.

So while everyone says fire Dooley I am wondering if an offensive coordinator change might just be what the TN Volunteers need.

While I respect, Dooley's loyalty and honor towards his fellow man and employee. He needs to consider the potential that is being wasted under this OC leadership. You cannot belittle the quarterback in front of his players during practice and think that he is going to have the confidence to lead the team.

Not to mention expect him to read a defense if you only let him run the plays that you tell him to run. With confidence comes the ability to see things and check off the run to a pass or vice versa. Bray repeatedly looks lost and confused by what either was called or by what he sees.

So the question is: Is it Bray’s inability or is it Chaney’s lack of producing a leader in a quarterback. And I know people will say it’s the quarterback’s coaches job but if the offensive coordinator belittles you as a person then confidence is lacking. Plus as an Indiana native it is obvious that Chaney prefers the pass and while that is spectacular we do need a run game in the SEC.

But yet we don’t have a good running back you say. Well we aren’t going to get one if we don’t show that we are going to run the ball. So while corrections have been made, and we have been running the ball more since Florida I don’t think that it was Chaney’s decision to do this, but more a call by the head coach.

Further more just because we have a high ranked offense doesn't mean that we have good leaders. And yes while our defense needs improvement, it is only Sals first year. As well we are never going to compete on the defensive side if we don't have the depth to keep up with this amazing high scoring/ 3 and out offense. Our defense was on the field for 47 minutes last night so while they did get burned a number of times early the big points that Alabama got didn't come until late in the game and as I recall that is the same thing that happend with Florida.

So decide what you will. I am hunting Chaney’s position not Dooley’s. His record is worse than Dooley's, since he has been hear before Dooley.

We can’t pull the plug on Dooley at this point.

Several reasons:

1. I think it looks like he’s building something. If you think it’s not important to build a program versus a win now attitude, see Auburn.

2. He represents my university well and handles off field issues with the program in mind.

3. Recruiting -- This guy has been pissing up a rope with something to sell and is still getting good players. Does he need more, YES. He is a really good recruiter and if we can turn the corner, it will really take off. Not to mention that if you run off Dooley then more than likely great recruiters like Hinshaw and mainly Jay Graham go to(Graham was a stud as a player and even better as a coach).

4. Next year - Holy ****!!!! Talk about next year. Here is Dave Hart’s conversation with prospective coaches: “Coach, we would really like for you to come coach our team next year. We just had our best 6 players(Bray, Hunter, CP, Juwan James, Maurice Couch and Big Dan) go pro early. Plus you get to road trip to Eugene to play the Ducks, Gainesville to play the Gators and Tuscaloosa to play the Tide. For all that we want you to leave *****(insert any hot assistant because no current head coach would take these circumstances) to come to UT to coach for a passionate but unrealistic fan base who will give you a very short leash and $2.2 million. Sound good?” Coaches response, “Thanks but GFY”.

At this point, most of our good players will come back. Bray’s not ready, Patterson is a freak but he’s not really ready. Hunter isn’t ready either but he’s got a small child so even being a third rounder will help his situation. I think the other guys mentioned above do come back if there is no coaching chance. Dooley has us in the lead for the top running back in the country, leading for the #2 wide receiver in the country and leading for a home grown DB that is a difference maker. The 2014 class could be really special and expedite the building process but a new coach and new staff will have to build all new relationships with Akeem Copperwood, the Berry Brothers, Dylan Bates and Todd Kelly, Jr. which means it would be highly unlikely that we get any of them.

If Dooley is gone after this year, I think we take another step back and that’s not what anybody wants.
The number 25th class in the country does not equal sec wins

Up until last night the offense had scored enough to win every game we played. The commentators prior to the game said Jim Chaney is one of the best in college football. Dooley is the problem and I hope very soon Dave Hart shows the Dooley supporters who he is placing the blame on.

While I agree that Chaney needs to be one of the ones shown the door along with Dooley. The thing that bothers me is in his four years here I have yet to see the same offense that he ran while at Purdue. When he was there it was a short game with 6-8 receivers being targets every game. Yes he threw the deep bomb but it was always in early moments of a half in the same formation that was usually a short pass and it always caught the opposing defense off guard. The really sad thing? His biggest weakness here is 3rd and 5. At Purdue that was a given first down. Brees to Stratton boom 1st down, every time like clockwork. And it wasn't just Brees that was successful (although he was the best) we had Orton and Dicken too that ran it well as well. Heck we were undefeated against the mighty Saban in that stretch while he was at MSU. Sadly it seems he lost his playbook between leaving Purdue and coming here.....

Agreed but that still doesn't explain the lack of leadership on the field. His offensive mind is great but his ability of building up confidence in players seems to lack.

The offense he ran at Purdue will get you killed in the SEC. This is a power league where you need balance and a mean streak on both sides of the ball.

It's time to yank that DD bandaid off and get serious about football or fill the stadium with dirt and hold monster truck races.

As much as I think Bray has all the talent in the world, I would love to see him leave and get Peterman in here as starting QB. Evidently, he's the real deal.

No good OC in his right mind would jump on the sinking ship that is the Dooley staff. It does not matter, Dooley is gone anyway.

1. Building what? A team that Vandy and UK can beat on a yearly basis?

2. No he doesn't. He loses every game that matters and constantly throws his players under the bus to cover his own lousy coaching.

3. We're 9th in the SEC in recruiting right now and are trailing Vandy. Also, each year his recruiting has gotten progressively worse. Not a good trend.

4. If we're only willing to pay $2M again, you're probably right. Hopefully our new AD realizes that you get what you pay for when it comes to coaches. Right now we're getting $2M worth of SEC coaching, and it's not pretty.

You are right, and there is no arguing with the power football point, it's just too bad I find that style of football boring as hell to watch. The LSU/Bama game last year was the penultimate power match up, but it was still a snooze fest with just 15 total points scored...

Again, I am not arguing against Chaney's ouster, I just noted that his offense is not the same for better or worse.

LSU and Alabama got it several years ago. Build a team with a great defense, and a ball controlling offense and you'll be a top team in the SEC (and NCAA).

My favorite part of this post is the assumption that changing coaches will hurt us in recruiting the Berry brothers.
