Why wasn't Cody flagged for removing his helmet?

You are normally pretty knowledgeable, but you are wrong here.

It was a live ball foul - 15 yards - and since the clock had expired and you can't end a game on a defensive penalty there would have been one untimed down.

I am guessing CLK would have re-kicked it. Not sure though.

As much as I hate this TROLL, he is correct guys. This type of personal foul is assessed as a dead ball penalty. It does not matter that it happens while the play is still live. We did not recover the blocked kick. Game over.

I went and looked it up. This is wiki, so nothing official-

"Twelve or more players participate during the play, because the extra players either are not detected before the snap or enter during the play. Once the down begins, no further players may enter the field and participate, even if there are fewer than 11 players. Illegal participation is also called when an offensive player goes out of bounds (unless forced out by contact by the defense) and returns during the play."

Sounds to me like it does apply.

How many times does it say the word "participate"? Which is what I said in my reply. Celebration is not participation.

Cody should not have been let in twice. Did you see how freakin fat he was....how did we make him look like he has a 36" vertical??????????????????????????

Listen to the man ^

A great played game but no matter how you looked at it...it would have been bama's ball.

If the play was blown dead (like 50% of the UT fans are saying) then the ball must have cross the line. BAMA'S BALL

If the ball wasn't blown dead (like the other 50% are saying) Alabama recovered. BAMA'S BALL.

I got this troll, go the heck away.

Yes we should have gotten the re-kick. I watched the replay, and Cody's helmet came off before Alabama recovered the ball and the change of possession. It would be somewhat controversial and I didn't have a problem with his celebration, but the fact that he took his helmet off before the play was over is a penalty. I don't think its too big of deal really, we had other opportunities to win the game....but it definitely could be justified if it had been called.

I like how the ESPN video on their site shows the Ref pointing out the ball on the ground and 2 Bama players running over to it after.

That call would have made a difference maybe if we spotted the kick 15 yards further back from the line on the re-kick. What gets me is the fact that penalties were so lopsided; TN 8-86 yards , AL 1-10 yards. I just don't believe they played that perfect of a game. Ref's are definitely protecting the #1 and #2 teams in the country, there is just too much money in it for the SEC. They can suspend them all they want after the fact, but they are taking care of the job during the game as instructed by the Slive! It has become blatantly obvious!

Excuse me???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? That's a 15 yrd penalty + a REKICK..... Zero effect??? Wow u should never be allowed to post again..... think before you type seriously.

We should have taken care of business ourselves.

This is a SOUR GRAPES thread....this loss had more to do with it than a blocked kick at the end. It should've been won on the touchdown....never should've blocked the first one.

Im not trolling...im just trying to help!! I felt bad that half the people on here don't understand the rules so i was going to clear everything up:shaking2:

Too bad you're too pathetic to show even an ounce of the class that players showed today. Pieces like you are a disgrace to the human race.

So as soon as the FG is blocked it is a change in possession? Or is it once the play is dead? Just asking cause I don't really know. You may be right, but the posession ? has to be asked to say wheter it would have mattered or not. Bottom line is there is no way Cody should have been allowed to block that kick!!!

No, the play is dead if the FG goes beyond the line of scrimmage, that's why if a partially blocked FG goes beyond the LOS, the defense can't pick it up and run with it. If this is the case, the play was over, time ran out, and Alabama won, regardless of what Cody did.

If the ball didn't not cross the LOS, it was a live ball until someone from either team recovered it. In this case, Cody committed an unsportsman-like foul before the ball is dead. However, since unsportsman-like conduct is currently treated as a Dead Ball foul according to NCAA rule, even if the foul is committed when the ball is alive. Therefore, Alabama recovered the football, and 15 yards will be enforced on the next Alabama play, and game is over then.

So, Tennessee lost, and the unsportsman-like conduct on Cody will not affect the result.

As I said before the helmet coming off did not bother me as bad as the ref pointing out the ball to the bama players when no one knew where it was. If you didn't see that you should go back and watch it.

Look Cody made a good play. Let him celebrate. I mean I was sick to witness that against my beloved Vols. The question that all Vols fans should be asking is why in the hell did CLK did not make any adjustments. The Sullins boys are at tops 260 lbs. Cody is 360 lbs. There is no way he could keep that guy from getting some kind of penetration. There is no question the Vols played better than the Tide today and all Tide fans know that. But UT made too many mistakes today and they are not good enough to overcome those mistake. They have to be flawless. Alabama has a good enough team to overcome mistakes. We don't. I mean the kicker did not help in the situation either. Its all good though. The Vols will be back. Give us lil time. Go Vols!

No way they call anything like that on Saban---he had the refs in his pocket the whole day.

Direct from the NCAA rulebook....

Unsportsmanlike Acts
ARTICLE 1. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct or any act
that interferes with orderly game administration on the part of players,
substitutes, coaches, authorized attendants or any other persons subject to
the rules, before the game, during the game or between periods.
a. Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:

(f) Removal of a player’s helmet before he is in the team area
(Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts; equipment
adjustment; through play; between periods; and during a
measurement for a first down).

If committed while the ball is alive, these fouls are treated as dead-ball
fouls.

PENALTY—Dead-ball foul or live-ball foul treated as dead-ball foul.
15 yards [S7 and S27] from the succeeding spot.

Since Bama recovered, it would be a 15 yard penalty on their possession. As much as I would like to have seen a re-kick, it shouldn't have happened. Had UT recovered, it would have been an un-timed re-kick after the 15 yard penalty (assuming it was called).

We just have to accept that we lost a close, hard-fought game.
