60minutes did a GREAT story on the price of College Football and it's value not only to the athletic dept, but the University overall.
I have a feeling Jimmy Cheek watched this right before he announced the decision to release the Football program from it's $6Mil/yr commitment to the University. This story says it all as to WHY we should pony up for Gruden!

Gruden could be good for the vols, I just don't see him being in it for long term, maybe just like a Lane Kiffin one or two years and that would not be good again for the vols. We need a committed coach that would put fear back in our program no other teams are scraed of the vols today not like in past years.

Yeah, I think Verdict is still out on how long Gruden would stay. But even if it's just 3 years and that 3yrs includes an SEC Championship, I think it's still better than where we are now. Like the story said, success in college football translates into success for the university overall.

For college footbal is all about one thing nowdays....$$$$$$$$$$$

It's everything from packing the stadium, merchandise, TV exposure, bowls, boosters, alumni...anything tied to the almighty $$$. Bottomline...no wins = less $$$. And which confernce has had the most Top 10 Teams in the last 10yrs...SEC. Which conference has the most highest paid coaches in the Top 20...SEC. Hart & UT will fork out $3.2-$4 million to get UT back in the upper tier. They have no choice.

Gruden would be to the Vols what Saban has been to Bammer. I'm pretty certain any contract would include an expensive buyout for both UT as well as Gruden. Give him a 10 year $50M deal and lock him up.

Man I don't like Bama.

Just thinking I know it wont happened wouldnt it be funny if we went to Bama and Hart stole O Nick from Bama, we go there for every thing else get there left overs you talking about putting the fire back in the Tennessee and Bama game.:eek:lol:

If Gruden does take the job, I think it could work very well. What I don't want is a guy who takes the job because of pressure from wife and family and he really doesn't want to be here. Saban took a job he didn't want at Miami and he never really liked being there. I want a guy that really wants to be here and can coach. That's why I'm trying to stay away from a Gruden or nothing attitude. I don't want to feel disappointed if we hire a great coach, because he isn't Gruden. If Gruden doesn't really want the job, move on.

He would stay long enough to win a NC, 4YEARS.

The upcoming hire is very critical and will impact our program for years to come. Just hope all involved get it right . :crossfingers:

Why do you think he would leave? Doesn't make sense. He could have any job he wants right now, nfl or college. Ive heard all along he insists on a long term deal. Why if your not totally committed? IF he comes its because his wife wants to settle down near her family and Jon likes the area and coaching college kids.

The thing is even if Gruden is here for two or three years. If he can recruit and continue to build up a solid SEC roster and wins 8,9 or 10 games a year maybe a trip to an SEC Championship and a couple of Bowls then if he does leave, Tennessee can still go out and hire another big name coach.

I said the other day to someone take Gruden's name out of the hat and look at the names TN is reportedly (rumored) to have on Hart's list Stoops, Fisher, Mora Jr. can you imagine that there will be fans unhappy with any of those guys despite that Tennessee will have just hired a guy away from a program that would likely finish in the Top 10-15 in the country! That would be major National News in the college football world.

I don't see Gruden leaving with in 3 years if he came. I think if he has the success that Saban has had at Alabama. He wouldn't leave so fast. Lets just hope the rumors are correct and we do get him.

I can't believe I spent $60K on my business degree when all I needed to do was watch CBS.

The difference beween Gruden & Saban is that Saban is a college coach who tried to coach the NFL, with the Dolphins. Gruden is an NFL coach who is going to coach college ball at U.T.
Saban returned to his roots, which is the college ranks and Gruden will return to his roots, which is the NFL.
I would rather have Gruden for a 4 or 5 year stretch and then him go to the NFL, than to not have him as our coach at all......
Had Dooley had a football head on his shoulders, we would have defeated Miss St. Florida, USC, UGA, Missouri and Vandy. Our record would end up being 11 - 1, with a loss to Alabama. Then we meet Alabama in the S.E.C. championship game and lose to them again and go to the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day....
(1) We get our 800 th win as a program this season.
(2) Recruiting is off the hook.

I think Gruden will work here and have a commitment here because he's been through the NFL gauntlet and understands the highest of highs (Super Bowl) and the lowest of lows (getting fired by Tampa). Another factor I think everyone should consider is his wife and family having ties in the area. I know it's been an oft joked about aspect---but loving east TN and wanting to be here because it would make the wife happy is a key!

If Chucky comes, it is because he wants it to be his last job and settle down in Knoxville area. Otherwise he will compete with Payton for Cowboys next head coach.
