What happened to UT Football Attendance:
There are several things
1. The Team hasn’t done well in the last several years. In fact, it has been a decade since the team has done really well.
2. There are more things to do now than ever before.
3. The promotion of the team in Knoxville by the Knoxville Media has went to pot.
It’s pretty obvious that our team hasn’t done well on the field. Through the 80’s and 90’s fans came to expect to come to a game and see UT beat the snot out of someone, anyone, in Neyland. For most of the last 10 years the game day expectation is we might win if everything goes our way and the other team isn’t too good.

20 years ago in East Tennessee there wasn’t much else to do on Saturday evenings. You went to Knoxville, kicked around downtown Knoxville at Sears or Millers, ate diner somewhere, and went to a movie. 5 or 6 weekends in the fall there was UT Football. Today Pigeon Forge offers a dozen different theaters, rides, water parks, shopping centers. There’s West Town Mall in Knoxville, shows, all sorts of things to do. Still, a lot of us love UT Football. The problem is, relative to other things, it’s pricy to go to a game. One can reasonably expect it to cost $250 minimum per person to go to a game. That’s tickets, parking, meals, gas, etc. There are other options that cost less. With the economy the way it is, like it or not, cost does factor in. One of the mistakes college athletics has made over the years is paying coaches too much, spending too much on facilities, etc to the point that tickets and parking have gotten out of hand. In my opinion, they made that bed, let them wolllow in it.

Then there is the 3rd item. Promotion. In the 70’s UT Football wasn’t that good. Yeah, we won some games and had some great players, but Kentucky beat us several times in the 70’s. We were about on par with what we’ve had the last 10 years. How was it overcome? Having a local media (talk Radio) analyzing every detail of UT Football? Nope. It was overcome on the backs of 2 people. Claude Tomlinson and John Ward. Between the 2 of them they made you want to come to a game and see the show in person. Listening to John Ward was like being there. It made you want to be there. The only way for it to get better than listening to John while watching it on the tv was to be there in the stands listening to John on a transistor radio.
Then there was Claude the Cat. How many remember Johnny Manors interviewing Johnny Majors? Pigskin Pollys, Leonard Poststis, all the UT skits Claude did with Lester and Mr Shultz. It was endless. It made people think about UT Football, it made them desire to go to the game. They did that then because that crowd was very significant to the Knoxville economy. WIVK’s advertisers wanted the people to drive to K-Town from Lafollette, buy a Car at Ted Russell’s, shop Cas Walkers, and go to the game. They did and it worked. When Wilhite and Wall took over in the late 80’s for Claude they took it to a new level. Every other song the station played was a special version supplied to them by the artist somehow mentioning UT Football.
It wasn’t just WIVK. How many remember WOKI playing Rocky Top 38 times in a row? Phil Williams on WBIR/WIMZ was always promoting UT Football.
Basically, the local media didn’t spend all day talking about this coach and that coach and which one needs to go or stay or who got in trouble or who did what. The things coming from the media in that time period were all UT and All Promotion.
Then came the 90’s. Andy and Allison. They SUCK. They weren’t UT fans when they got here and never will be. They aren’t local people, they are just here making a living. John Ward retired and we got Bob Kessling. I realize Bob Kesslinig is a Vol for Life, but as UT’s play by play guy he doesn’t generate 1/99th of the excitement John Ward Did. The other stations in Knoxville are “Talking” about UT football and 80% of the talk isn’t good.

I believe in #3 got fixed it would negate #1. Lowering the cost to go to the game would go a long way to fixing #2.

$250 per person??? I went to the Oregon game last year and spent about $100. That included the drive up from Chatty and several beers after the game.

I can rememeber most of those things mentioned when I was a kid growing up in Lenoir City listening to the pre-game show. Also, I used to love the Phil Williams songs such as "I'm a Gater Hater", etc.

East Tennessee was all Orange growing up. You lived and died by what happened on the field on Saturday.

You're absolutely right man. I knew as soon as I heard pigeon forge was getting all those movie theaters I wasn't going to UT games anymore. I mean why would I go to UT football games when I could be at west town mall, or playing mini golf in pigeon forge.

Then you got crappy seats.

not really. If you're spending $250/person you're either traveling a long way or drink too much

the thought of Pigeon Forge or West Town Mall taking away from UT football is crazy though. Pretty sure both existed in the 90's

NOT THAT I KNOW THE EXACT AMOUNT OF SEATS; But from the outside looking in I believe there are so many season ticket holders that are not paying the seat tax and only buys them for profit, I see allot of these seats filled by the opposing teams fans at the big games or empty at the other ones, IT MAKES ME SICK.
If UT would spread the tax for all seats in the stadium it would be more affordable for all instead of few, some of which doesn’t attend the games anyway.

I am not sure what you mean by seat tax. I paid 1000 just fir the right to buy the tickets and that is on the low end of the donation. You do realize that UT sold tix to a broker that is selling them nationwide to whoever.

$100 is getting away pretty cheap with a ticket, meals, gas, parking, drinks, etc. I'd say closer to $200-$250 all said and done is about right. It all depends on what your gameday experience is like. If your tailgate party consists of a bologna sammich, Kroger brand cola, and Golden Flake tater chips then you can do it fairly cheap. If you go a little more "high roller" with grilled grub, liquor, and beer it'll cost a bit more.

You've got to think about more than just what's available in Knoxville. The Titans have syphoned off some ticketholders. I know folks here in the Nashville area who don't want to go to Knoxville on Saturday and follow-it up with a noon kickoff on Sunday.

I also believe that as the lack of championships continues, there will be less and less natives who grow up Vol fans. Those sidewalk alumni have been a huge component of the Neyland crowd for years and years.

Bad economy, HDTV, and other things to do really don't matter at all.

If the team wins it puts butts in seats.

I think the fact that a season in which we won 10 games and the SECE while losing the SECCG and our Bowl Game became the measuring stick of success had more of a role in the decline of attendance.

Brother...I can tell u what the problem is with two words....WIN GAMES! Mark it down, if we beat Florida and go 4-0 before Georgia comes in, Neyland will be packed without an empty seat. GURANTEED!!!!!

which are still choices and not required to go to games

Give me a Vols game any weekend. No theater? No. Gosh man, that's unAmerican! Nope. How's that? always some jackass at the movie who insists on kicking or pushing the back of your chair. But if you rise and hit him in the mouth you go to jail for assault. Vols games just make more sense to me in the light of theater or cinema.

so winning cures all? Seems like that's been repeated in every thread about this subject but keeps getting shrugged off

and we left that measuring stick a long time ago. Not getting embarrassed by our rivals and beating UK/Vandy became the new one
