Why the Passing game has been struggling.

A lot of people want to blame Azzani and Debord for lack of WR production, but the lack of offense in the passing game is for a combination of different reasons.

1. Marquez North and Pig Howard have been injured

Our two top playmakers in the passing game, have either been playing hurt or have been out of the game. Pearson and Josh Malone have struggled, at the times when Dobbs has tried to get them the ball. This could be blamed on Azzani, but he also has had to groom two freshmen one of which was a QB until Fall camp and has turned out to be one of our best players. He deserves some credit for Jennings.

2. Offensive line struggles at passblocking.

Kerbyson has improved, but the struggles come from the right side of the line from Weisman and Kendrick. In the first quarter against Florida, we dialed up a deep throw, but Kendrick got beat by Alexander for a blindsided sack and it ended up being a big loss.

3. Dobbs is not an accurate passer

Dobbs has improved his mechanics, but still has been inconsistent at times. I think Dobbs has not shown the coaches in practice that he can be effective throwing accurately. Dobbs is a gamer, and I think coaches need to have more faith in Dobbs to deliver the throw, especially when the running game has progressed so well. Coach Jones has said they will make passing the ball more of an emphasis against Arkansas so we will see.

He's not bad on intermediate throws. He does struggle with the deep ball. It should also noted that the coaches haven't made an effort to use the pass game extensively.

To be fair, they have run the ball effectively most of the year. They out up 250 rushing yards against Florida last week. I don't know with that success that they should have thrown it much. That said they don't use the middle of the field at all and they dontnuse enough short routes. It defies logic. You have a qb who struggles throwing deep and an oline that can't pass protect very well. Why call routes that are deep and take a lot of time to develop?

I would like to see JJ used on the fly sweep with the option to pass every now and then. I think that's a dynamic few teams can deal with.

Just my opinion.

100%

You can't tell me with all the talent we have out there that they can't get the ball to them. DeBord doesn't want to take the risks that are involved in the pass game because he is horrible at calling plays. point blank. DeBord is a bad OC, and Butch is his little do boy and will not/ won't correct his errors. So we will watch 67% runs, and bubble screens all year long.

We run the Dink and Dunk offense.

I included an earlier post by myself.
And that's with our "Dink and dunk offense"
Because if that's all we run and the accuracy is still this horrible... well..
Not sure of the answer but as a start,
Dobbs 63% competion rating 2014.
2015 -58%
For clarification, that's a drop from the 30th in the country to 87th.
Put it on coaching or whatever, still not a boost of confidence.

I'd say OL protection is the biggest issue. They have done a great job at run blocking but our pass blocking is below average.

from this vid it looks like our passing game is suffering due to the play of our center.

They keep a chart that grades every player on the OL. They have it there where all the players must see it every day. In August there was only 1 player that ever graded higher than the center that started for us last year. They wiped it clean in September and immediately last year's starting center and Kerbs were right back at the top. Their best grades being in pass blocking. The center that is starting now has never graded in the top half. I could play center against Western Carolina but against decent SEC DLs this is discouraging. Looks like CBJ is keeping a recruiting promise to me.

I just spent the morning watching the ou game play by play offense (thanks freak). I only made it thru the first half, I got upset. Here's my peso about the offense.

1. Many of the wr routes are run within 5 yards of each other. Literally standing on the same number on the field.
2. We run a fake bubble screen (5 times against ou)on draw plays. Why? It takes 2 if our receivers to run this without an outlet receiver.
3. We have 3 receivers on a go pattern the same yardage downfield without 1 receiver going back to the qb.
4. We do a lot of 3. A lot and it wastes 3 wr period. Complete waste of time
5. On sideline routes again, 2 wr on a hook pattern and the could give each other a pat on the back. Within 5 yards of each other with no one crossing the middle.
6. We might form a pocket 1 out of 15 plays. It is by design because we block like a goal line rush. The offense cannot pick up a blitz with a run blocking scheme on pass plays.
7. No crossing patterns, ever
8. When our wr do run down the middle its only to take out the safety, they font look back because they are covered. Basically a strait line into the safety without any deviation.
9. We always have 2 receivers run 5 yards and stop. That's it. More than 6 times in the first half.

this is just the first half vs ou. I got upset again. Everyone needs to watch this at least 3 times.
No imagination, no crossing routes, run blocking on pass plays and I have yet to see a mismatch. Not 1. Unbelievable

I edited this to apologize for beating a dead horse. This is gameday and an opportunity for our coaches to overcome their own hurdles...

To go along with the previous post, the oline blocking isn't as bad as most make it out out to be. Between refusing to pass it and our receivers never being sent down field, opposing defenses simply stack the box and regularly send six or seven after Dobbs. The oline, no oline for that matter, can block that many rushers. It's coaching and an inability to pass.

Hard to have a passing game because of #6... You can't block somebody when you're on your hands and knees and you won't have a pocket when you Ole' your DL like a matador.

I am not totally blaming the coaches... and the online does need work. Its almost impossible to pass protect when the blocking scheme is for the run. There is no pocket. There just isn't. This is on pass only plays also.

Dobbs isn't accurate based on one pass to Josh Smith that he missed? Are you serious?

What about the 3 throws during the final possession? Including that beautiful sideline pass between the safety and linebacker to Kamara.

I personally haven't seen enough pass attempts from Dobbs to buy into this narrative that he's inaccurate.

Sure he's inconsistent right now. But who wouldn't given the limited pass attempts.

dobbs missed many wide open receivers against Bowling Green while their QB made us look like @ssholes. The media this week openly questioned why they ever got behind Dobbs. They said he can scramble but nothing else.

People like you just make up stuff. He was 78% with a couple drops and a couple throw away passes against pressure versus BG. Where were all of these wide open misses? Dobbs was 78% and their qb was 55%. We scored 29 more points and could have scored more.

What media has said that? I live in Knoxville and literally have not heard one media member say that. Who said it? They have all blamed play calling and line for the most part.

If we cannot generate a decent passing performance against Arkansas then thats beyond sad. I certainly hope the passing game opens up.
