This OC hire isnt your standard OC hire. Tennessee, and more important Pruitt, desperately needs to get this right. A mediocre hire, or worst yet, a complete Sunseri, would spell doom I am afraid for the young head coach. There are several reasons why Freeze should be a "no brainer" despite his pass history of poor personal decisions.
1) Pruitt needs to have someone on his staff experienced in game management to help him. Several of his decisions made little to no sense and it is clear he was inexperienced on that segment of the coaching position.
2) Pruitt also needs to focus on being more of a head coach than a DC/OC . Hiring Freeze, CJP can leave the Offensive room and never come back. Hopefully he can develop confidence in his defensive staff to allow the DC to call the defense. Not sure acting as DC is in his best interest either. Lets not kid ourselves, Pruitt isnt the Steve Spurrier of defense (capable of managing a game and calling the defense)
3) Freeze has the offensive mindset/experience to be able to do more with less which is where Tennessee is right now. Hiring a young OC like Helton and expecting him to be able to attack SEC defenses in this league with limited talent really is like throwing a kid into the ocean trying to teach him to swim. This isnt the PAC 12 and he didnt have 2016-17 USC talent to work with. Freeze will be able to reduce our weaknesses and play to our strengths better I believe. And getting Pruitt (if its true he called the plays vs Vandy, he should never have a offensive play sheet in his hands ever again) out of the offense.
4) Last, Fulmer desperately needs something to revitalize spirit of the fan base. Again a lukewarm OC hire will do very little to fire up the fan base. While recruiting is going well, we have a decade of good-great recruiting classes ruined by poor to mediocre coaching. Having Freeze as OC would give Vol fans hope for 2019 season for improvement.
