Why should we be optimistic about our defense next year?

The title says it all. Any analysis on last year's d besides "Sal sucks"? What/Whom did you observe that you thought could work this coming year? I like Johnson, not saying he is Al Wilson, or even Omar Gaither or Kevin Simon, but he was the most exciting part of our defense (although I have always enjoyed watching Lathers as well). And how about the new class we have coming in? Shame about Carl Lawson, but who else could contribute right away?

So what should we be excited to see on our defense this year? Ill hang up and listen.

If the coaches can get the players to play two halves then Tennessee will have a chance. More importantly with Bray, Patterson, and Hunter gone new leaders will rise.

1. We have two great dt's.
2. Maggitt and Smith should be great de's.
3. The secondary will be a year older, and Randolph will be back.

Are they moving Maggitt? He's listed as a LB on the 2013 roster. Not saying it wouldn't be a good idea - just thought he would fit well at OLB. I thought they would move Jordan Williams back to DE.

What else are you going to do be negative and miserable all off season.

I know we are going back to a 4-3 but why would Maggitt and Smith be moved to DE? They both played LB in the 4-3 in 2011.

The D improved every year under sirmon. They was in the 30's when he left. Sal came in and changed everything and the D fell to like 118. That was basically with the same players. I think if they are coached better then they have to improve.

And I do believe getting Randolph back will help. A good safety that the corners and lb's can trust goes a long ways.

Maggitt has been our best pass rusher since he arrived. As a freshman he played de on a lot of passing downs. But with the lack of depth at lb, you may be right.

i'd heard it was huge losing him last year, but i remember UF exposing us before he got injured, so i dont think you can blame it all on the lose of randolph. curious to see our depth chart this spring

Kevin Wilcox was the defensive coordinator. Sirmon was a linebacker coach.

One way Florida exposed sal the idiot was by setting all their eligible wr's to one side of the field, and then running back to the opposite side.

We would bring both corners to the same side because sal loved man to man. Then when they broke contain, it was a td.

Whose saying we're going to be any better? Hey Volnation, here's an idea. Go into next season with NO expectations and you won't be ready to kill yourself if we lose to Western Kentucky (which isn't unthinkable). This fan bases problem is way over zealous, unreasonable expectations. Let Butch do his thing and in a couple of years we'll meet back here and talk about expectations.

Remember how good it felt last basketball team when we had zero expectations and we just watched basketball and Cuonzo surprised a lot of us with some close games and some good wins. That was nice. I vote that we do that for football this next year.

Here's to ZERO expectations (raise glasses for a toast)

Is he also part of the strength and conditioning program preventing unnecessary carb-consumption? Just kidding dude. :salute:

I believe we have a top 30 D and win 10 games including Autzen and Gainesville! We may even burn Tuscaloosa! We should be 100x better at every position. How can we not be? I hope we get some big name guys that have an immediate impact as well. Never UNDERESTIMATE COACHING AND EXPERIENCE! GO VOLS!
