Passionate players don't always translate into good coaches, could explain why he is now in FL as an assistant coach for a highschool team. He has 2 sons playing college ball, 1 is at Arkansas State, the other is at Northwestern

He, also, played and learned from perhaps the best special teams coach when he played for the Cowboys, combined with how good he was on special teams, it should be a win all the way around, plus Dooley can handle TEs.

That page does not factor in his "passion" to coach college kids or to come back to Knoxville. I am sure Bill lives a nice life and enjoys the cattle ranch in Texas, if he wanted to come back to UT as a coach he sure has not expressed interest in it since his retirement. Being on the road recruiting, limited time to coach and work with players, and the fact that money is not a concern for him, is probably why it will never happen.

Clean house, imo, and give me Peyton, Al Wilson, Inky, Bill Bates, Dane Bradshaw, and bigvoldaddy ftw, gbo.

So much bleedin' orange that Neyland Stadium will need a tourniquet.

Exactly. Fans seem to think every UT legend/hero is just dying to come back and coach at the good old U of T. Just not the case. Depends on what their aspirations are and the type of commitment they're willing to make. Bill has a lovely wife and family and is very happy/successful. Just no interest in coaching. And as has been pointed out, great players don't always translate into great coaches/recruiters regardless of how big a hero they are to the fans and how "intense" they were as players. Takes a certain type to coach/recruit at this level. Still....fans are going to keep throwing out names of popular players thinking that's going to cure what ails this program. Silly but there's no stopping it.

I love Bill Bates, one of my all time favorite players. But there is a system in place, Sirmon is a good example. He comes on as a graduate assistant, learns from Thomson and Wilcox, proves he can coach. They bring him on as a full time assistant and give him a territory to recruit. He continues to do well, he can move up from position coach to be a coordinator etc, etc. Bates is older than Sirmon so if he wanted to be in the college coaching business he would be somewhere along that track. He isn't so, I'm guessing he doesn't want to be in the business.

We don't need a special teams coach to recruit much.....We need him to ****ing coach.....teach how to tackle primarily.......you have another dumb analysis.

Love Bill Bates one of my all time favorite Vols and Cowboy!! But, what on earth would make some of you think that he would be a great D1 coach?? Newsflash, not all (very few) great players make great coaches.

This isn't true..........we don't think and want every legend/hero to come coach. Another dumb analysis....... Just stop. On another note; Bill bates would be one hell of a special teams coach anywhere. I think that is really the point here and yes he should be welcomed at UT anytime.....

Again, what is your basis for this? Because he was a hell of a ST player?

Yes, that is part of it. He is also very intelligent when it comes to football sense and knows what it takes. How you could argue that he wouldn't be a good coach is the confusing part about all of this..... isn't he currently coaching anyway? I would guess you aren't currently coaching....

On another note: Bill Bates coached special teams for the Jacksonville Jaguars as well...........

Some would argue that coaching high school ball in Florida is equivalent to coaching at some colleges.

maybe that high school's special teams is better than UT's. Wait...........isn't everyone's?

Oh. Name some...............

Why don't you name me a few that have made the transition. For the life of me, outside of a couple NFL guys I'm having a hard time naming some great players that became great coaches.
