Why not an NFL coordinator?

If appeasing the fan base is even a concern of his then he can hit the road too. He gets paid a lot of money to make these decisions, not the idiots on Vol-Calls.

I'm not saying appease the fans, just give them hope. Fans = tickets. Tickets = money

I agree. But first and foremost we need to win games. I would rather go 10-2 next year than sell out the O&W game. We need a competent coach even if its not somebody the fan base is excited about. Lets face it, a good portion of our fan base are idiots who believe in their hearts that Peyton will be our HC in 5 years!

I have often thought that Josh McDaniels of the Pats would make a good college coach. I think he knows his x's and o's and young enough and well spoken enough to recruit well!
I think MacDaniels would make sense, too...maybe more so than Del Rio. Cause after his rift with Cutler, he never had a QB to work with, in Denver. I think it was a bad mistake to let Cutler get out of there. Had he made amends, he would likely still be Denver's coach.

But this is all pointless, as it's really looking like Gruden is going to be the man. Having Peyton as the point man makes the whole prospect much more feasible, IMHO. Let him run the offense (like Kiffin and Petrino does), and try to hire Mason (DC) at Stanford...and things could get real up in here.

Mason has NFL experience with the Vikings and there is no denying that his defense performs above their talent level. The ONLY team to shut down Oregon's scary good offense, this year. Shut down USC's Pro style defense with 2 of the best WR's in the country and a QB who was everyone's early favorite for the Heisman.

I think the following coaches would all be very successful at UT:

Jon Gruden
Greg Roman
Butch Davis
Charlie Strong
Larry Fedora

He's not an assistant but was a heck of a coach and it may be interested in getting back into coaching after a long layoff. Bill Cowher very intense coach and a winning back ground plus he displayed a lot of loyalty when he was at Pittsburgh.
