Why no pink for UT?

It's piling on at this point, but all three seasons, Dooley has refused to allow UT to participate. UT has three seasons' worth of unused pink wristbands and socks.

This season, we were the only SEC school not to participate in the awareness program in football.

Well, lol...maybe the pink slip he's fixing to get will resonate.:p

Even if it's that high, you say that like it's a good thing. If you stood up on a ladder with a megaphone before one of these Walk For The Cure events and assured everybody that FULLY TWENTY CENTS OUT OF EVERY DOLLAR YOU'VE RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS FIGHTING CANCER, do you think they'd be happy to hear it?

I said it like its a good thing? I was just providing the number I found.

I think it is astonishing low, especially considering that they spend twice as much in education and production materials than they do research.

That's not the explanation that he provided. What he said about it doesn't cast a very positive on him, so I'm just going to leave it at that. It makes our school look terrible to be the only one of 14 not to participate.

You're assuming all of these programs involved Komen, and that's not true, either.

I have no idea what Dooley's motives are; I don't particularly care. I know that my own mother, who's a breast cancer patient herself, sneers at the pink wristband BS. She calls it a sham, and brand extortion, and worse. So maybe Dooley's the only one refusing to be extorted. Maybe it makes our school look terrible, but only to people whose sensibilities are so thin and vapid that we shouldn't care what they think to begin with.

My apologies. I misread your tone. I thought it was even lower than that.

It's not just Komen. It's Armstrong. It's most of them. At some point a charity gets large enough that it has to spend most of its effort merely supporting its own weight.

No worries...just watching the news in Memphis, where they had the Komen RFTC today...spokesman said that about $0.25 of every dollar would go toward research and $0.75 would go back to area initiatives...

Wow.. some of your responses surprise me. Especially the negative ones towards awareness of breast cancer.

Sorry. I would proudly wear a pink UT shirt.. I've lost too many friends and family to this terrible disease.

Is prostate cancer less important? Why don't be have any awareness for that because it kills more people every year than breast cancer.

Ok...

I work in an industry and I can tell you for a fact that just because YOU are aware does not mean that enough people are.

Steaming hot pile... Whatever. One life saved is worth it to me.

Maybe not to you but it is to me. Maybe not to you but it does mean something to those lives that are saved.

You have a million dollars that you want to spend to fight breast cancer. Do you spend that million dollars on an advertising campaign in the hopes that one more woman will get a mammogram than would have otherwise, or do you give that million dollars to a research team that could benefit every woman who currently has or ever will get breast cancer? What it it's ten million dollars? What if it's a hundred million?

MOST OF THE THE MONEY NEEDS TO GO TO RESEARCH. The "one more woman makes it worth it" argument for "awareness" is fine if they're aren't huge tradeoffs. The tradeoff is that all the money they raise goes towards getting people to get tested for a disease that not that much money is going to fight.

Are you talking about breast cancer or other forms? Cancer is cancer. Why the whole month is about breast cancer and not the other varieties is beyond me. And yes I've lost friends and family to cancer, my mother most recently. It should be CANCER awareness month whether breast,brain,lung,etc.....

How can you be a Tennessee fan and dislike our tradition? Go away stupid

I don't dislike our tradition. It's just that some people care more about tradition that they don't even truly understand than they care about winning or supporting a cause. There are too many UT fans that think our tradition began in the 60's when we starting running through the T & started wearing a T on out helmets. Our football program actually began in 1891.

Well if your ashamed UT doesn't wear pink then get rid of your orange and buy some crimson, blue, black,or purple. Not all college or NFL players wear pink, doesn't mean they are not for BC awareness , this is a stupid thread, I don't know why I even commented. But I do have loved ones with cancers of different kinds, I've lost loved ones to cancer, my Uncle Jack died of bone cancer , he was the biggest Vol fan ever, had four squares of the orange white checkered turf when it was removed, and had Manning and fulmer sign it, his truck was UT VOLed out!! Died of cancer , buried in orange and orange only! Don't think he's lookin down sayin "that's why we're losing!were not wearing pink!" Let's support awareness however we can! If our Vols don't wear pink don't mean they ain't prayin! VFL GBO RIP UNCLE JACK akaDOUBLEJACK!!

Sorry for your loss... but this thread had nothing to do with the Vols W/L record.

My mom has been fighting breast cancer for almost a year and it annoys me that we are the ONLY team in the SeC who didnt show awareness this month at some point. I proudly wear my pink some form every single day. Im pretty sure i read that it was Dooleys decision not to. FIRE HIS ASS!!! HE IS AN ASS IMO

This, in and of itself, proves very little.
However, when added to all the other things we know, it shows what an ass Dooley is.
