Why no pink for UT?

No disrespect for fighting cancer, but I get tired of seeing pink on every other game I watch anymore. Why dont the schools donate all the money they spend on pink stuff to the ACS....and actually help research!?!

:eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol: Sorry but that's absurd. Not only does the SEC have plenty of female fans, but thinking the color pink will get women who don't like football to watch it is plain dumb.

Say what you will about whether it's meaningful beyond, you know, showing respect to countless women in our lives and others' lives that have suffered or died from this horrible disease or whether or not it does enough to raise money (pink does go to breast cancer research to some degree) but don't float such ridiculous theories.

Want ridiculous? American Cancer Society spends 16% of their budget on cancer research. 16%! They spend more on fund raising. The main donater to Breast Cancer Awareness Month also makes the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen. Oh...they also own a sister company that makes industrial chemicals; one specifically known for causing breast cancer. And lastly, this pharm. company owns multiple large cancer treatment centers...why?...to stear treatment how they wish. Now, that's ridiculous.

Say what you will about whether it's meaningful beyond, you know, showing respect to countless women in our lives and others' lives that have suffered or died from this horrible disease as well as their families (men included) or whether or not it does enough to raise money (pink does go to breast cancer research to some degree) but don't float such ridiculous theories.

Actually hes spot on. If you don't think football is trying to get female fans interested in the game and getting more money flowing into their product by doing this, you are ignorant.

Awareness has little to do with curing cancer by some Star Trek technique. But what awareness does is get people thinking more and more about breast cancer.

Awareness leads to more breast cancer screenings (both personal self checks and professional exams) and more screenings lead to early detection. Early detection leads to lives saved and less invasive treatment.

We need all the pink we can get.

You realize breast cancer is NOT the leading cancer in women, right? Many don't know that.

Breast cancer is targeted, as breasts make women feel like women; hence, women and their loved ones get involved raising awareness, hence raising more $. If one believes the emphasis is to find a cure, you are mistaken. There is no $ to be made in a cure. Period.

I am glad we are not wearing pink. Do you really need to do this to tell people you dislike breast cancer? This is the first year I have ever noticed college teams doing it.

I'm so sick of the pink crap.

Obviously, it's not because I'm for cancer. It's because like everything else, it's got to be used for marketing because women are better consumers.

Why do you think there is no hype about prostate cancer, even though it affects more total people than breast cancer?

I know I'm going to come off as an A-hole here, but really, it's time other cancers and diseases get some "awareness." I'm pretty sure all U.S. women know to get mammograms at the appropriate age now.

Don't know percentages but I am pretty sure that prostate cancer is much easier to cure. Breast cancer kills manyore women that prostate does men. Sorry but just participated in Race for Cure today in Germantown and it is good stuff.

No it is not ridiculous. If you knew anyone or have been personally affected then you would not think so.

My mother has breast cancer. My grandmother died from breast cancer. My mother-in-law had breast cancer, and her mom died from breast cancer, which means my wife might very well die from breast cancer.

Football players wearing pink doesn't do a damn thing to keep it from happening. Money going to research keeps it from happening. The Komen Foundation gives a vanishingly small slice of its revenues to actual research. The pink awareness crap is a joke.

First of all, I am deeply sorry for your loss. And second of all I pray that you mother wins her battle.

Your numbers are accurate about research but this skews the data. If 100% was given to research then a gaping hole in the fight would be exposed. Here is the ACS budget breakdown from 08.

Patient support 37%
Prevention 25%
Detection/treatment 21%
Research 17%

Here is a link to the article if you are interested. How the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure spend their money | The GiveWell Blog

Like I said before, awareness is more about early detection than anything.

Football, both college and pro has have an overwhelming show of support for breast cancer awareness. If that gets ONE woman to perform a self breast exam and question a strange lump or another to get a mammogram and the result is early detection and treatment. Then how can someone question how ridiculous the pink socks or towels look.

I'm kind of scratching my head as to why UT Football choose not to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness month?

SIAP.. but, to me.. feels kind of like another fail..

Thoughts?

It's piling on at this point, but all three seasons, Dooley has refused to allow UT to participate. UT has three seasons' worth of unused pink wristbands and socks.

This season, we were the only SEC school not to participate in the awareness program in football.

Komen raises money to stage events that raise awareness that raise money....to stage more events to raise more awareness. The "even one more woman" argument is a giant steaming pile. At some point more of the money has to go to actually fighting cancer, or the whole thing is just a pointless circle jerk.

Komen was founded when breast cancer victims were scorned, ignored, given double mammograms without even asking them, etc. That's not the case anymore. No disease in the country has more "awareness" now than breast cancer. It's time to turn the efforts to actually fighting cancer of all kinds.

Dooley's wife is an OB. He probably knows firsthand that the whole thing is basically Komen extorting sports to build up its own brand, so that they can then turn around and sue other cancer-fighting organizations for using the color pink or the words "for the cure."

That's not the explanation that he provided. What he said about it doesn't cast a very positive on him, so I'm just going to leave it at that. It makes our school look terrible to be the only one of 14 not to participate.

You're assuming all of these programs involved Komen, and that's not true, either.

Even if it's that high, you say that like it's a good thing. If you stood up on a ladder with a megaphone before one of these Walk For The Cure events and assured everybody that FULLY TWENTY CENTS OUT OF EVERY DOLLAR YOU'VE RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS FIGHTING CANCER, do you think they'd be happy to hear it?

My husband is a cancer survivor Mom passed away from cancer too.. don't need pink to remind us how important research is.. too bad all the money doesn't go towards research.. I am a former mammographer and have seen more than my share of women with that horrible disease..

Ok...

I work in an industry and I can tell you for a fact that just because YOU are aware does not mean that enough people are.

Steaming hot pile... Whatever. One life saved is worth it to me.

Maybe not to you but it is to me. Maybe not to you but it does mean something to those lives that are saved.
