Heard some radio guys saying the worst thing about this season was Shoops inability to make changes.
When we lost 3 DTs, DOB, Tuttle, Mac....what could have been tried?...Jerry Glanville said to put Charles Mosely or the biggest guy we have at nose tackle...and go to a 3-3-5 defense...
I just still can't believe we gave up so many yards and points to MU, U.K., VU.

There will be some defensive changes next season. Sutton, Barnett & JRM will be gone. This is not the type of changes that we want though.

It's not like those were great offensive football teams, especially Vandy. I don't know, it was frustrating to watch. The Defense all year, even when healthy just wasn't very good. Had their moments early, but the injuries killed them and the coaches didn't give them any help..

he tried alot of things ...too numerous to list . Some small and some big adjustments . We lined up in 52's and 44's. Different gap schemes too. I think the defensive line issues were devastating but the losses at LB only made it worse.

I dont think most people appreciate how bad the losses at safety affected the play of the entire D . The safety typically ties the secondary to the front and the communication with the front is key to make sure coverage and pressure is tied. This position loss made it difficult to do anything but the most basic things

If Shoop and Co. couldn't get it right then put 3 Safeties out there

Based on what I've seen I would have ran the 3-3-5 too.just keep the NT and linebackers rotated to keep them fresh.

Barnett
Vickers/Mosley/Kongbo
Vereen

McDowell/K Bynum
DKJr
Ell.Berry/Jumper

Gaulden
Sutton
Mosley
Tkjr
Abernathy

We could have gone with a controversial formation featuring 4 DEs and 5 CBs. We certainly had the personnel for that.

The comment during the SEC championship game..."Saban gives 100% of practice time to the ones so there is a learning curve for twos when they come in". Duh. When you are subbing threes for twos as starters...we are lucky we didn't get beat worst than we did. Being at the Vandy game, the proficiency of there pass and catch was amazing. Like shooting threes lights out in basketball. We had good defensive backs with hands and bodies right on the play and they made miraculous throws and catches. That and turnovers did us in IMO. Given injuries, not sure anything else would have made a difference. Could not get pressure on Vandy QB even with blitz. Hope our players heal well and we don't have another rash of injuries. I don't consider Bama losing two players anywhere near as tough as what we are going thru.

Not sure about Barnett/Vereen in extended snaps as 34 DEs. Just because they play there in a 43 doesn't mean they'd pay there in a 34. Vereen in particular would likely need to play Jack.

While not a negavol, I still wonder what the heck was going on the first games of the season before we had a ton of injuries. The quality of play was so sporadic. Personally, I complained about Butch's "play with passion" "keep emotions out of it". Sorry, passion IS an emotion. My gut feel is that tamping down the spirits of the team and filling their heads with checklists of techniques that bypass instincts when they should just be playing football. But, what do I know, I was in the band (and not the Pride of Tennessee-one, either).
