Knoxville and East Tennessee just won 5 of the 6 state titles. There are about 3 or so D1 commits from those teams. Numbers are just not there to build and sustain an SEC team.

The money spent on high school football here in Texas is incredible.

Weather also plays a huge part. An elite athlete is going to be elite in almost any sport he focuses on. Guys up north are going to play hockey and basketball during winter. Guys in FL, and large parts of TX and CA can play football year round.

Coaches see talent at a young age now and advise parents their kid should focus on one sport year round. If it’s cold outside 6 months out of the year then a lot of those kids are going to be playing basketball all year. Throw in you need a lot of space for multiple football fields (NYC has a ton of people but not much football talent)

Warmer weather places attracts more people to the states thus making the population bigger, and also the demographics of the population.
