Why Is Pat Summit's Divorce News?

First, nobody is going to confuse me with an advocate for women's basketball. Also, by raising this question publicly, I'm kind of defeating my point. However, I have to ask why in the world Pat Summit's divorce is any of the public's business. The fact that the major newspapers across the state are running this as major news shows the complete paucity of restraint or journalisitic instinct among the whole lot of them. It's nothing more than a way to lure in idiot voyeurs. Divorcing her husband in no way affects her ability to do the job that makes her a public figure. The media should be ashamed, but that bus pulled out long ago.

Simple, people want to read about it.

Maybe it's not the lead story of the day, but I would think it merits A1.

It has no bearing on her job whatsoever, but she is a well known public figure and it will sell papers. People to read other people's dirt.

Sorry guys, but that's the honest truth to it all.

Woah, woah -- how can you even ask the question?

*Of course* her divorce is news. How can it NOT be news??

I'm a Cal football fan who couldn't care less about men's or women's NCAA basketball, yet I know who Pat Summit is. I've even seen her on Jay Leno.

Pat Summit is nationally famous, nationally prominent.

When something happens in her personal life, it is NEWS. It is a public matter because she's a public figure.

This is an IMPORTANT, LIFE-CHANGING event happening in a famous person's life. Whether you like it or not, it is most definitely news.

It is not tabloid or a sign of the gossipization of journalism, it is pure and simple news.

If President Bush were to divorce Laura, that would be news too.

Also, I'm not saying getting a divorce will have an effect on Summit's coaching, but it is something that has to be taken into account. I mean, how could you not?

If Nick Saban were to file for divorce tomorrow, would you seriously expect newspapers to IGNORE IT?

I'm not sure why people think this is big news. To me, it's a personal issue that ought to have ZERO bearing on her coaching career or the University. I don't remember who it was, but someone on this board would not shut up about her divorce last Spring. I got way tired of it. I'm with you on this, Hat. It is garbage that people use this, and likely connect it somehow to the team. Don't mix home with business.

The media doesn't care about privacy, yet they do stories on how the government invades ours everyday. What a bunch of hypocritical crap!! Pat's divorce is her business and honestly I could care less about it other than to give her my full support in whatever decisions she makes from this point forward.

This is the first I've heard of it. I think it's funny that you of all people brought this to my attention. I'm not sure if this just isn't a noteworthy story in Memphis, or I've just been too busy to notice.

I think it's a sad and pathetic commentary that the news media believes the general public has a bloodthirsty desire to know the every detail of all public figures lives. It's too damn bad we all don't have an expectation to live a private life. Wouldn't it be a great idea to have all news sources and reporters be required to give full disclosure of their personal affairs so we, as the public they are supposedly serving, could better judge if their reports should have any credence?

The general public DOES have a bloodthirsty desire to know the intimate dealings of all our public figures. The news media is just giving the people what they want. Half of the people who are complaining about it on here are probably guilty of reading this stuff anyway. It's life. When you have won 7 National Championships you will be in the public eye. It's sad, but it is what it is. The public gets what the public wants.

Wouldn't known about it if hadn't came across your post, since I live out of state. So, therefore you are guilty of the same thing you are critizing the local media of by posting it on Volnation, which is read by millions!:birgits_giggle:

I guess I didn't convey my thoughts well enough. I'll just say, that doesn't make it right. Screw the public on folks private lives (not including criminal behavior) being aired like dirty laundry. That is all.

Agreed. I'm tired of them waving around Paris Hilton's skidmarked undies in our faces. Let the woman do some laundry for goodness sakes. Oh wait, nevermind she doesn't do laundry.

I have to say: Pat Summitt is shockingly well known nationally, considering how completely unwatched women's basketball is. In the week following her rendition of "Rocky Top" last year, four of my female friends (who do not care at all about any sports) called me about it. Two of them used the word "goosebumps." Like it or not, the only two UT people who are household names right now are Summitt and Manning, and Summitt is much more indelibly assoiciated with UT than Manning. (I run into people all the time who have no idea where Manning played in college, but anyone who's heard of Pat Summitt knows where she coaches.)

Yep, its newsworthy for a day or so because she is a public figure. But the fact is, divorce is a very sad thing and all parties, particularly their son, deserve privacy. As long as she wins those games and earns that salary, it is really none of anybody's business about the events surrounding the divorce.
