Why I'm so confident...

go look at that roster. 2001 was a helluva team. talk about draft picks? i think there were 16 or so players off that roster that made an NFL roster at some point or another. that team was loaded. so was 99...but good grief.

I usually hate it when people quote d4h.....but this time is an exception.

Overachieved? Of all the idiotic statements that could be made. That team was a NC caliber team. Probably the last GREAT team UT has had. No. They did not overachieve. They under achieved their potential.

Edit: IMO 1996 - 2001 were all Championship caliber teams. The 1998 team was the only one that actually achieved it. The others underachieved.

Definitely should have been better in 1997. 2001 was a great team but I dont think we would have beaten Miami that year. But D4H saying the 2001 Vols dont stack up to the 2016 Vols talent wise is perhaps one of the dumbest things that has ever been posted on this site.

We'll be worse next year as well.

I really don't get the idea some have here that we'll be better in 2017.

2016 is the best shot we might EVER have to win it all.

We'll be losing guys like Hurd, Kamara, Sutton, Barnett, and JRM after this year. Even if you don't think Dobbs is as good as
I do, that's a lot of elite guys we'll be losing that will go down as among the best in program history.

This idea that we're gonna be better in 2017 is comical. Especially after a less than stellar
recruiting class in 2016.

I think Georgia will be pegged as the early favorite to win the east in 2017.

100% agree. Great post.

To be fair to me, I did say NC caliber. To me that means you get there. The Championship is decided between two NC caliber teams. They underachieved by not getting to the game to see if they could beat Miami.

Also. There was supposedly no way the 85 Vols were going to beat Miami either. Miami was suppose to cake walk to that Championship. Ooooops. They forgot to tell Tennessee that.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that we don't get hit by the injury bug; every team goes through it but at least now we have some depth to deal with it and it's not an injury to one key player will stop us. Outlook for 2016 is brighter than it has been in many years--finally.

go back to 95. the 95 team went 11-1, beat Ohio St in the Citrus bowl and finished #2. Florida lost the national title game, Nebraska won it.

we were definitely spoiled. the 04 team didn't suck either.

2017 will be a reload year rather than a rebuild year. A steady increase rather than a bump then down again. We will have quality starters and quality 2s and 3s in 2017. Along with an increase in freshman players that will be able to red shirt.

Look at what we are going to sign, and I don't think the money of the NFL is as big of a draw than to represent the Vols. We may see a trend of players staying rather than go pro.

Go Vols!
whoops...wrong poster...my bad.

I have the same level of confidence, perhaps more so. The talent, athleticism, depth and conditioning on offense, defense and special teams will be our best in <10 years. The wild card is injuries to key players of course. Losing someone like Hurd or Dobbs could be devastating. Looking at the brutal 4-game stretch, I predict we beat Florida handily and we follow that monumental win with a close victory at Georgia where we shut down their passing game due to relentless pressure on the young QB. Keep in mind GA will be coming off a brutal road game at Ole Miss the prior week. I predict the letdown will come at Texas A&M and we'll suffer a close loss on the road, then return to Knoxville with a huge and decisive win at home versus Bama. Afterward, the road game at SC looks dangerous, but we win ugly and finish the regular season at 11-1.

If we prepare accordingly and handle our business on the field, there's no reason we shouldn't beat Florida this year by quite a comfortable margin.

If we prepare accordingly and handle our business on the field, there's no reason we shouldn't have a chance to beat Alabama this in the 4th quarter.

Talent wise I think we can play with anybody in the country. It's just going to come down to things like attrition and focus. We control our own destiny this year and that's the first time I've been able to say that in a long time.

IMO this could potentially be one of the greatest UT teams we've ever had in Team 120. Plus the addition of Shoops on defense will help our chances. I like our chances in every game this season...a lot! No excuses and enough with the "next year" BS. the time is NOW! I'm pumped and can't wait to see this team prove the pundits wrong.

Lastly, shout out to Coach Jones and staff and all the players on the roster for all the hard work they have put in to get us back to this point. The dark cloud has FINALLY left the hill! And that's a credit to everyone involved with our football program. Go Vols!

Yeah. I actually meant 95 - 01. Don't know why I typed 96. Fat fingers I guess.
