Why hunt down a high profile QB?

So you’re good with going 7-5 this year? Because that’s where we likely end up if we don’t bring in a different QB. You drastically underestimate how important that position is to a success of a team. Also a good coach tailors his system to his personnel. So ideally a QB won’t have to learn a whole new system and Heupel can implement some concepts from their former school
What are you basing on how our red shirt qb would play? I have no idea, but I think he could easily do as good or better than Nico, just my opinion, because I did not see great play from Nico last year, our redshirt has as much experience as Nico did last year, minus one game.

We have to sign an upperclassman. We will never win 10 games and make the playoffs with a redshirt freshman QB! 😂😂😂
What did we do last year with a redshirt freshman? And he certainly didn't light it up as qb. If our redshirt freshman can't play the position why did we recruit him?

We have a RS QB that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a true freshmen that was supposed to be top shelf when he was recruited. We have a 5* coming in the next class. What's the point of recruiting them if you're scared to play them? Why recruit someone from the portal with the intention of starting them? What signal does that send to those guys? Merklinger is exactly where Nico was coming into the fall except for the bowl game start. McIntire wouldn't be the first true freshmen to start at QB for us. I know that we would prefer to put a proven product on the field but just because some guy knocked it out of the park playing for Northeast Western State for the Infirmed doesn't mean that will translate to the SEC any more than a RS Freshman with a year under his belt practicing with the team. If we pick up someone cheap, sure. Why not add depth? But we shouldn't be out trying to recruit a replacement for Nico with the intent to spend that money. Take the money Nico would have got and get some solid portal players to bolster the team as a whole. We are going to be run heavy again this year. Sure. Pick up a spare QB. With only two on the roster, we are thin. . Pick up a lineman. Pick up a DB. Pick up a spare receiver. But looking to blow that money on another higher profile QB knowing that Faison might look around if he feels like he's likely to sit for 2 years is foolish.

Bottom line is, if you're not going to play the guys you recruit, then stop recruiting them. Just live out of the portal. Steal known talent. Be Ol Miss.
Neither of the young QBs were in line to play much anyway. Try to bring in an experienced guy from mid-major and if he isn’t capable, start the young pups by game 3…

Of the 958 offensive plays we ran last year 61% were run plays and only 39% were pass plays. Regarding these pass plays, many were either unsuccessful, or were for less than 10 yards. That all said, you don’t need the second coming of Peyton Manning to do the same! In fact, you could probably put the 2nd chair Tuba player in there to hand the ball off 61% of the time.

So you are telling me that a 4-star redshirt or the 5-star true freshman could not come close to the same numbers or results? I for one propose that they might do even better…even chancing an 11 or maybe 15-yard pass!! GBO!

Honestly, kind of like Juan Jennings, I would love to see Boo take sole snaps lol.
He's an athlete and I will never understand why Jennings never got a look as a QB under Butch

Jennings was a BEAST as a QB in HS
Josh Dobbs was solidified as the starting QB Jennings’ first two years and never missed a game. Then Jennings got hurt in game 1 of 2017. Never played another game for Butch. Jennings enrolled early and started out at QB. Wasn’t the best position for him.

AP said he talked to McElroy (former Bama QB) and asked him essentially how difficult would it be to come in in April and try to learn Heupels offense. Basically it would be extremely difficult. And again you bring in a high profile starter, you risk ruining the chemistry of the locker room. Merk has earned the trust of the team. I will be shocked if Heupel brings in anything more than a good depth piece.

Heupel isn’t Lame Kitten.

Because we play in the SEC and need one because Merk and Mac currently aren’t capable of taking this team to the playoff this year
Merk is a RS freshman. Nico took us to the playoffs his RS freshman year, and everyone on here is saying how he was overrated, missed too many throws etc. So why can't Merk? Won't have Sampson but should still have multiple capable RBs.

What QB EXCELLED n his first year under CJH here in Ktown or maybe even in his first step?

I GUESS we are shopping for a potential difference maker, but will be prepared to take a good one year backup or challenge guy to keep GMAC out of a heavy on field role this first year as they feed and condition him for SEC play and await our next 5 star. Not often lightning strikes, and certainly can’t bank on it.

No reason to doubt the two guys already here. Pulling one up a year seems plausible.

Hot take... Nico is overrated and his dad is trash! Find a game manager if you don't have playoff aspirations, a stud, if ya do. Either way, we need a qb1 to contend for the cfp in 2025/26

I’m all for starting the perceived better one of Merk and Gmac. If the first doesn’t click within the first couple of games, give the other a try. They’re both making money. Let them earn it.

I agree whole heartedly. If Heupel has to go sign a starter out of the portal to me it indicates that he has missed out on his talent evaluations for the QBs he has already signed. That is not a good signal for the health of the program nor as you stated would make a freshman want to sign here if they are going to get portaled over before they even play. Would rather see them try and get an above average play maker to add to the team or some linebackers and DBs.

I think you are are drastically underestimating Merklinger and Mac. Merklinger was 13th ranked QB in his class, Mac was 17th rated. These guys can play and are talented.

We are simply recruiting a 1 to 2 year starter. Nothing that means anything for any decent amt of time

You could have 4 top 100 QBs on the roster and all of them could bust. We’ve seen countless top QBs not pan out here. It’s a tough position to predict.

No one knows how good Merk/Gmac are. And if they aren’t ready yet, it also doesn’t mean they won’t develop a few years from now.

I’m not underestimating them. I just don’t think they’re capable of winning 9 or more games with our current offense and schedule. Now if we had a Ryan Williams and an OL returning 3-4 starters with experience playing together it might be different
