Why has our LB recruiting been so bad? Really missed badly and it's showing

LB coaching is our problem. Thig isn't getting it done.

Not sure if he would be the problem if Reeves-Maybin and Kirkland were playing...and it would have been good to see Sapp and McDowell filling in for Reeves-Maybin but Sapp's gone for the season and I haven't heard about McDowell...

What is it that Thig does (or doesn't do) that makes him a liability?

What else would you have him do? There's no way he could have seen our top 4 linebackers would all be injured, or that highly touted blue chip guys like Bates and Bryant wouldn't pan out. 8/11 of our scholarship linebackers are 4*.

Got 2 more four star recruits committed to go with the two true freshmen four star recruits...

With backups and backups to backups playing agains Bama is a recipe for a butt kicking.

True but Berry did have some good plays...of course he was caught out of position on several long plays but the O set was designed to fool us and with our backup inside linebacker and 4th string outside lb playing we were fooled more than once...

So who developed JRM? He was a low 4*. What about Sapp? Berry looked solid out there, out of position a few time but that's expected from someone making their first ever start. Go watch the beginning and last year and go watch this 4 game stretch and tell me if Jumper has gotten any better

I remember people on here calling Jumper trash last year after a bad performance . Doosh bag posters IMO

The more Berry plays the better he will be. He sure will look better against the future competition.

When Shoop was hired on he should have had the opportunity to bring his defensive staff or hire who he wanted to. Maybe he will get his chance at the end of this season.

Great question this thread. I agree we have some position coaches that don't recruit well and others that are not developing players as well as needed. But remember it's a business and Butch has a limited salary budget. You can see he is upgrading coaches as budget allows. I expect to see a few new position coaches this year in the positions already mentioned in this thread. You also need to be careful with coaching turn as it hurts recruiting unless you get a big name like Shoop.

Bama's and OSU's star players have panned out pretty well wouldn't you say? Sounds like a coaching issue to me.

There's 5 stars that can play from day 1 and 5 stars with potential, they get the Cream of the crop , so yes they usually work out.
The rest get the leftovers and hope the work out'

Issue with defense is the injuries. OL is the area of concern IMO.

That's a very legitimate statmet. I'd add the offense line to this as well. If the Vols continue to recruit 3 star players at these positions, they will never compete with top 5 teams.

This is the point, 3 star recruits usually don't match up very well with 4-5 star recruits... as witnessed against Bama....the talent differential was huge and won't change any time soon

Maybe when kids get sick of Alabama winning all the time they will flock to UT and show 'em who's boss.

We looked very, very slow against bama. We desperately need defensive speed. Jumper who seems to now be everyone's favorite is slow as hell, he wouldn't be on Alabama's 4 deep, thus the difference between the two teams. We just aren't there.
