If Buddy Green is Dooley's pick for DC, here's what it means:

(1) We're converting to a 3-4 defense and need a DC that knows how to implement it from a tactical standpoint;

(2) Dooley is choosing a DC with a proven track record of success on the field;

(3) Dooley is looking for stability because Buddy Green is loyal and unlikely to up and leave after a few years (he's been at Navy for 10 years);

(4) Green likely gets paid $500K, and Dooley will have more money to spend on filling out the remainder of the staff;

(5) Green's recruiting abilities are entirely unknown because he has been at a service academy (although our last DC didn't do a whole lot of lead recruiting either);

(6) Expect Dooley to fill the OL coach and DL/LB coach with top-notch recruiters;

(7) Thompson is not leaving

I think we will have the horses for a 3-4 IF we get McCullers and Santos. 2013 could be a big step up for us if we keep the current staff.

I know a LOT of ifs.

if buddy green is dooley's pick for dc, here's what it means:

(1) dooley wasn't able to land his 1st, 2nd, or 3rd (and maybe more) choice for the position.

(2) we're converting to a 3-4 defense and need a dc that knows how to implement it from a tactical standpoint;

(3) dooley is choosing a dc with a proven track record of success on the field;

(8) thompson is not leaving

Green is 60 and recently had health issues causing him to miss spring ball. That would kill us in the middle of a transition. I say no thanks.

re #5, some have argued that to get any decent navy players at all you have to be a great recruiter due to the academic requirements, payback, etc.

can you elaborate on #2 as that appears to be a primary critic from others and I only know of this guy from Buddy Ball?

Thanks for the analysis - rational input goes along way here lately.

This staff needs recruiters that can fill the void left by Sirmon. Buddy probably forgot how to recruit. This is my biggest gripe about him.

I don't know about that. Can you imagine how difficult it is to talk a recruit into committing to a service academy?

1) hate the 3/4 defense, we will get run over in the SEC
2) if the guy is 60 years old, and the best job he has had is Navy, forget him

How do we know he's loyal. Sometimes a person stays at a job forever because they have no other options. I have no idea either way but to help maybe the OP or someone else can name all the programs that have made a run at him in the 10 years he's been at Navy. That would help.

I saw an article in the newspaper last evening that green actually causes less damage to the lungs than tobacco smoke.
