Why Fulmers firing was justified and probably a few years to late

It should have happened after the LSU game in Atlanta in 2001. That would have saved a lot of embarrassment, and even more pain and suffering.
This was the beginning of the end. It became more and more obvious that complacency had struck the team from a recruiting and game preparation standpoint.

There's a list of reasons why it was justified. We would have been significantly better off if we did it after 2005.

BULL SH!T FULMER WAS ALL VOL and we've really done well since you all got your wish and got Phil fired, well Fulmer was better than any of the coaches hired since him

I would guess the new question now is, is the firing of Butch justified and are we a few years too late?

Fulmer should have never been fired. We will soon be on coach #4 trying to duplicate the most successful run in UT football history. As I said publicly at the time, you treat him wrong and the great coaches will take note. He was fired to protect Neyland's records as he would have eclipsed in about 3 years. He would have finished with the 2nd most wins in SEC history and the most in Tennessee history.

Hamilton wanted to make a name for himself as he forgot what the real UT history was prior to Philip. He talked Haslem into it after convincing him to not let him break Neyland's records. Everyone over there (Ainge confirmed on the radio) that Hamilton was sabotaging the program the last few years. Hamilton brough in Clawson as the coach in waiting. Fulmer did not want that. When it went south, Hamilton could not hire him.

What should have happened is that Hamilton should have supported the most successful coach in school history. Came to Philip to work on a succession plan that would have taken place after he broke those records and with Philip on board without the hurdles, he could have helped find a real successor.

Fact is, the way Hamilton did it, it has set back UT football for decades....maybe ever. It will be a long time before they even get to 10 wins again. The amount of players, success, future NFL Hall of Famers etc that came from that era will never be duplicated again at UT. Hope you all enjoyed the ride now time to get some reality with your expectations. What you see in the past 8 years IS UT's history. Except the Hall of Famer's era of course.

And it was around #5 the day he was fired iirc.

Problem was his last few years were very seasaw in recruiting. A top 10 class, a bottom 20 class, a top 10 class, mid 30s class. Also didn’t help that #3 07 class completely fizzled.

Sanders firing really hurt the '06 class
Cutcliffe, Roper & Luke leaving gutted the '08 class

The Fulmer firing was absolutely justified, unfortunately the timing was hampered by a unseen issue at the time. The administration had become the real issue and was masked by long coaching tenures in key coaching spots minus men's basketball. When turnover started the deficiencies bubbled to the top. Some bad luck was involved as well with the Kiffin hire, while solid at the time the fact we passed on Patterson and Cut in retrospect was a huge mistake.

I've heard Brian Kelly really wanted the job as well.
