How many bad recruiting years did he have? That was by far tgr the worst of them. Fact is its been about a decade and we still haven't come close to the success we had during the late 90's and early 2000's.
I don't know if this happened or not, but if it didn't this is how I wish it had happened.
At least a couple years before they should have let him know they wanted to go in a different direction. Let Fulmer retire or move on his own (if he would), and have something in place ahead of him leaving.
Yep, should've fired him even sooner so we could've missed our last SECe division title and trip to the SECCG in 2007. Hell, it took the doofus 6 years to even win a national title. Should've run him off after he couldn't even do better than only winning 11 games and winning an SEC title in 1997.
Really? Who would've been better at that point? Guess we should've hired Kiffin or Dooley or Sgt Carter way back then and we'd be winning SECe division, Southeastern Conference, even National Championships by now? Yep, the whole key to getting this program turned around would be if we'd have fired Phil Fulmer 3 years before we did. We just waited too long to get on with going 56-50 overall and 23-43 in the SEC post-Fulmer. These are actually the good ol' days.
Firing Fulmer was the right thing. Hamilton just really screwed the pooch by making Kiffin his first choice. Kiffin ran off a ton of players then took off himself. Hiring Dooley was just the s**t icing on the a$$ cake.
Problem was his last few years were very seasaw in recruiting. A top 10 class, a bottom 20 class, a top 10 class, mid 30s class. Also didnt help that #3 07 class completely fizzled.
Who can say what would have been if Fulmer was not fired?
Personally, I don't think the firing was the problem. The real problem was that the 24 carat certified moron acting as AD totally F-ed it up. He had no plan to replace Fulmer and was too busy skiing in Colorado to do anything when Kiffin warned him he might go to So Cal. There was no transition either time and all the good that Fulmer had done was lost in the dust. Fulmer is pure VFL. Had the moron AD talked to him, together they could have picked the RIGHT replacement and made the change smooth and seamless.
