Why not give the job to a guy who has the experience and credentials? Last I checked, Blackburn doesnt have a job and would likely jump at the chance.

may just be timing. of course, we'll find out more when we find out if this is an interim or permanent announcement.

Fulmer makes the most sense. Regardless, the decision has been made. Fulmer is the new AD. Fantastic news!

Pretty sure I saw that Blackburn was working for a search firm. I don't have a post that I can confirm that, but usually an interim is someone that is already employed by the school. That's my thoughts on why.
If Fulmer is the interim and they don't make him fulltime, I wouldn't count Blackburn out of the running for the full time job.

Been lurking for years and finally gave in and made an account so I could get into all this craziness.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if one believes that there is an internal power struggle within the board that each side is fighting to get who they want as AD, and that Fulmer is on the non-Halsam side, it would make sense for each side to gravitate towards naming someone who is already in the Athletics Department. I would think if the non-Haslam side went with Blackburn, the Halsam camp would have the advantage.

Because Fulmer has no experience for one reason, and that's the UT way. And because he represents a sizable power faction in the UT family is another. They see it as getting "their man" rather than getting the best qualified man for the job.

I swear some people will never be satisfied. Just be glad Currie is gone. Not everything can happen exactly how you want it to.

In short, because pretty much everyone with power at UT is an idiot

Blackburn should have been AD originally but the Haslams didn't like that he was not controllable. Fulmer was a proposed compromise that I wasn't thrilled with but better than Currie

I'll see who Fulmer hires but very uninspiring hire

Perhaps Blackburn doesn't want to be the AD now...may have something else going on.

Is the move permanent or is he acting athletic director until a permanent one can be found?

Because then the title of this thread would be “Why Blackburn and not Fulmer?” :dunno:

Where is Blackburn? What's he doing? Why'd he quit at UTC? Why doesn't he have a job if he's such a find?

I would say Blackburn has more going on than Fulmer. Much easier for him to assume to role than a guy still working FT.

He may very well wind up with the job, but this isn’t a bad stopgap.

Even if the admin wanted Blackburn there is no time under the circumstances to contact him, for him to ethically exit from his current employer and get on-boarded at UT. We have a program that is literally burning down. You want to wait a couple of weeks (at best) to name a new AD? With Fulmer sitting there already on the payroll and who knows all the players and all the players know him? Come on people.

I would much rather go through this with Fulmer than Currie. Plus we all know that Fulmer loves Tennessee and will do what is best for the University. It also seems that Fulmer has the support of boosters not named Haslam, that is a HUGE win in itself. To me it says that the boosters, the ones that actually want to see Tennessee restored to its former glory, are finally making it happen. Fulmer may not be the most qualified guy, but this is a great day.

I take it the lack of replies to the repeated questions as to why Blackburn resigned in June is because nobody has any info on it. My searches only return that he resigned from UTC. No reasons given. His reasons may have bearing on his consideration for UTK AD going forward. Again, anyone have a link to a report providing the reasons behind Blackburn's resignation?

To officially hire a new AD at a state institution they probably have to open a search and look at a bunch of people to make everyone happy.

Blackburn may end up AD later next year is my guess.

Phil already an employee and easy to appoint him acting AD, he will get us a good coach.
