Why florida needs to go undefeated to make the BCS championship game

I dont know about that Fsu looked pretty solid in their bowl game if i remember correctly... and the pac10 is overrated

but the ACC is fanstastic? looking good against a karl dorrell coached team means nothing. I called the FSU win as did most trojan and cal fans. Dorrell has a horrible pattern of his teams showing up for one game out of 3.

Non-conference games:
Sept. 1, 2007 W. Kentucky
Sept. 8, 2007 Troy
Nov. 17, 2007 Florida Atlantic
Nov. 24, 2007 Florida State

They have 8 home games. And only one (LSU) tough road game.

I don't care that they play in the mighty SEC, they should be ashamed of this schedule.

What should we be ashamed of? We just won the NC with the hardest D1 schedule this past year! Surprising that you'd take indirect shots at us for our upcoming season. While I admit that we aren't playing the toughest schedule again, any SEC schedule is far from easy. We'd LOVE to play the Arizona and Oregon teams, but we don't have that luxury. Unlike the PAC-10, this conference has an additional "grinder" of a game in the SEC championship...as if winning the division isn't tough enough.

And don't worry about us too much, the next years schedule gets tough again, when we have games at Tenn, Florida State, Ark, and the neutral GA game, as well as adding Miami to the non-conference schedule.
Please tell me why I should be in "awe" of Cal's schedule beyond the games against Tenn. and USC?

i merle said you needed to go undefeated to justify a BCS championship appearance. I would say the same for Cal.

I do think the grind of the SEC conference is somewhat overrated considering you only play 8 conference games and at least 3 of them are against perenial bottom feaders. But I certainly agree winning the SEC is A LOT harder than winning the pac-10. On the other hand with the sec's nc schedule going 8-4 or 7-5 overall in the sec isn't a accomplishment. therefore the "we have 8 bowl teams" statement to justify sec supremacy i have never understood. I had no intention of making the comparison between Florida and Cal btw. I don't really have a leg to stand on there.

I do agree that we'd need to go undefeated, as this is a much easier road in 2007. It was only our stength of last seasons schedule that allowed us in the BCS. However, I think with us rebuilding on D, we may have 2-3 losses this season, so it will be irrelevant.

So whats the feel out there for Cal's upcoming season? A lot of hype last year, but it looked like they didn't play up to their talent level. I thought you guys could have beaten USC, but there was a lot of self destruction. (Kinda reminds me of our game with Auburn) Longshore should have a solid year. Is Forsett the main guy now?

Most cal fans expect our best team in 50 years. Though i imagine we will be ranked much lower in the preseason, which is probably a good thing. A lot of the press has focuses on the big 3 we lost on defense, but those are really the only guys and the d should be much more experienced overal with good talent returning. I agree we should have beaten USC. There was no excuse for a cal team with that many weapons to not score more points. Our OC was extremely conservative in close games last season. He is gone and tedford will go back to calling the plays which should help a lot. Longshore was injured the end of last season (not seriously though), i suppose that could have been a factor. Our oline didn't get the push we needed in that game too. I expect the oline to be vastly improved this season. Longshore should have a moster season too. Forsett is the main guy with montgomery and slocum (highly recruited redshirt freshman) and best and vareen (high recruited true freshman) fighting for playing time. Best just won the 100m state championship running i believe a 10.3. He also scored 48 tds as a senior. With most of our oline returning and a couple of those guys being all pac-10 as sophmores last season, our running game could actually be better even though we lose lynch. The passing game should be among the best in the country. Dline and one corner spot are really the only questionmarks on the team. But that doesn't mean we wont suck it up, stuff happens.

Montgomery hasn't looked good in the spring and Slocum is hurt.

a good deal of the starting oline has been hurt this spring. montgomery has established himself as the #2. I'm not sure it's fair to say he hasn't looked good.

article on montgomery: ContraCostaTimes.com - Cal is counting on Montgomery

"It's nice to see that James Montgomery is a real player," Tedford said. "We expected it, but we know that we have some depth at tailback."

Montgomery had a couple of impressive runs. Working with the first unit, he ran over defensive back Marcus Ezeff on a 9-yard run that set up his short touchdown dive two plays later. He also broke a 30-yard touchdown scamper with a quick cutback as part of the second team offense.

As spring drills end, offense gets flak from Tedford

Yes, TN's out of conference sos is stronger. But....

2007 Tennessee
Sept. 1 — at California
Sept. 8 — Southern Miss
Sept. 22 — Northern Illinois
Sept. 29 — Central Florida

2007 Florida
Sat Sep 1 Western Kentucky
Sat Sep 8 Troy
Sat Nov 17 Florida Atlantic
Sat Nov 24 Florida State

Hardly "sneering" strength.

You might want to check who started the thread. Vol fans aren't talking trash about the UF OOC schedule... THIS year. :p :)

That schedule is not quite right. Northern Illinois backed out of the Sep 22nd game. We were forced to scramble for an opponent and had to put Arkansas State on the schedule.

the thing is we that sec teams dont need a tough out of conference sos to be respected....whereas as other conferences do

that's true many years, but not all. look at auburn in 2004.

yeah i knew someone would bring that up...but if auburn would have scheduled tougher out of conference games...would they have been in the title game?? probabely not

That said, Florida will have the advantage of starting the season ranked at or near the top. With that advantage, they could lose one close game to a quality opponent and still make the title.

Something we have in common. :)

Seriously though, it is tough no matter who you are to make it to the Championship game, and assuming that less than two other major programs went undefeated, UF could go with a single loss to a quality opponent.

So much depends on what other people do if you lose that one game. Last year Florida lost to a very good Auburn team (that admittedly faded towards season's end) and then caught about 3 zillion breaks to back into the big game. Now, they then whalloped the heavy favorite and deserved the NC they won.

But lesson is if you want to assure yourself a spot in the NC game, then win all of your games up to it. Should you lose one along the way, you simply are placing your fate into the hands of other teams. Seems like every year at least one team gets the perfect storm and advances. Last year, it was us.

To defend here a bit, back in the day Troy had all the athletes.

Of course, "Back in the day" was like 100 A.D.

Our schedule is fine even with the weak OOC games. Assuming we would be 12-1 and SEC Champions, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 1-loss team that would have a better argument than us. The Big XII, Big East, and ACC are very weak relative to the SEC, and even if a Pac 10 or Big Ten team has a better schedule than us now, we will have the boost of playing another high-quality opponent in the SEC Championship game (especially with the strenght of that division this year).

Plus, I think we'd get a boost in the polls from being the defending national champions.

So I don't think we have anything to worry about from a scheduling standpoint, even though it's true that with FSU falling way off and the addition of the 12th game our schedule may not be quite as intimidating on a yearly basis as it once was.

Don't worry, though. In 2008 when I expect we'll have a much better shot of competing for a national championship game again we'll be playing Miami, Florida State, and Hawaii out-of-conference. With the strenght of the SEC, that should be more than enough. This year, I'm much more concerned with getting back to Atlanta than I am with winning it all. If we did win it all in football this year, I think all the other schools in the NCAA would vote to have us kicked out.

Kudos on playing the 'Canes. However, don't insult people's intelligence by trying to pass Hawaii off as a quality opponent.
