I noticed a lot of the posts today about ESPN praising Dooley and how amazing that is since they hate us. A few posters were speculating as to why they hate us. Some even blamed Fulmer. Here is my theory. . .

Syracuse has a great sports broadcast journalism school. Per wikipedia "It is best known for its sports staff, which has produced the likes of Bob Costas, Marv Albert, Mike Tirico, Sean McDonough, Ian Eagle, Brian Higgins, Dick Stockton and many others." Remember the pass interference call in '98 and the subsequent UT win over a McNabb led Orangeman team. There is your reason. It all goes back to 9/5/98. UT 34 - Syracuse 33.

Seriously on the theory or on the post in general? If I remember correctly in 2002 something like 50% of the hired journalists at ESPN were Syracuse graduates.

I would say they dont like us because we cry and complain about them all the time. There are two or three of these threads every week. Who cares if they dont like us? I DONT!!!!

Not that I'm supporting the ESPN conspiracy theory, but the animosity of Vol fans against ESPN dates to the Manning/Woodson Heisman race. Peyton should have easily won the Heisman that year, but ESPN pushed Woodson all year long, for some reason wanting a defensive player to win the award. Many, including myself, blame them for Peyton being robbed. Do I think they had it in for us? No. But I do believe they swayed the opinions of some of the voters with all their hype.

dude you must have alot of free time to put this much thought into it.....

Not really. It just struck me several years ago when I heard how much of their staff was from SU. Someone above said there 3 threads a week about this. I watch the boards pretty regularly and haven't really noticed any.

I'll tell you why they hate us. Everything associated with Tennessee is deep seated in tradition and a sense of history and pride. Everything about Tennessee is well known from our Rocky Top anthem, checker board in zone, biga$$ stadium, NFL legends, etc. and so forth. They are just jealous they didn't come from a kicka$$ school like Tennessee. Amen, praise the Lord! and pass the ammunition!

I've come to accept the fact that ESPN hates UT. I would say its an "East Coast/Northern Bias", but they hate my Yankees too, being that the entire crew was shown on an episode of behind the scenes of sportscenter and the majority were Sox fans as well. The syracuse theory makes perfect sense being that it was the theory going along with the NYT writer during Hostessgate as well

Get a hobby that doesn't involve sitting at your computer and ranting on a Tennessee message board.

I think they just hate Kiffin to be honest. USC had a really good day today and I heard a lot more fun being poked towards USC and the staff compared to the praise 7 rankings down.

Everybody who's a fan of any American sports team thinks that ESPN hates his team, in exactly the same way that opposing fans of two teams can listen to the exact same game telecast and walk away swearing that the announcers were rooting for the other team, the refs were biased in favor of the other team, etc etc. Tennessee has been a slackjawed, underachieving team for most of the ESPN Era; therefore most of what Tennessee fans have heard about their team on ESPN has been about how it has underachieved; therefore ESPN hates us. This whole thing is just stupid. The only thing ESPN "cares" about -- if a corporation can be said to care about anything -- is money, which in ESPN's case means TV ratings. The notion that there's any agenda other than to maximize ratings is nonsense.

Maybe it has to do with a certain camera being thrown into the river after a game. That was ESPN's correct?
